Hawkins Park, from 5:00 to
8:00 p.m.
First Friday in August kicks
off Jamboree weekend! Join
your neighbors and friends in
celebrating arts, entertainment
and culture in our community.
Come browse the works of lo-
cal artists and crafters, watch a
mini-engine demonstration or
ask questions of Chip Bubl, our
Columbia County Extension
Agent and Master Gardener.
Kids can make magic wands,
decorate cookies and take a
swing at a piñata! All visitors
can enjoy a light snack while
listening to the jazz of Mac &
Cheese on the gazebo.
First Friday is a revenue
generating activity for Vernonia
Hands-on Art and is dedicated
to celebrating the arts, bringing
people together to meet neigh-
bors, exchange information
and share skills, and reinforc-
ing a sense of community.
And, most importantly, to have
a good time!
Still time to be part of talent show
Vernonia has talent! Here’s
your chance to be on the stage
or enjoy others’ performances.
“Talent Show Fundraiser” will
be held Friday, August 5, at
7:00 p.m., in the Washington
Grade School gym. Admission
is $5 for adults, $3 for youth;
proceeds benefit the Vernonia
Schools Foundation and Ver-
nonia Community Theater (a
program of Hands-on Art).

Summer Reading program still
has offerings for adults and kids
The Summer Reading Pro-
gram at the Vernonia Public Li-
brary continues with the follow-
ing activities for children:
• Movie Matinee on Satur-
days, July 23 and 30, at 2:00
p.m.
• Story & Craft/Activity Time
on Tuesday, July 26, from 10 to
11 a.m.
Events for the whole com-
munity include Chris Leebrick,
Storyteller, on Thursday, July
21 from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. and
Knights of Veritas (check with
library for location of this event)
on Thursday, July 28, from 6:00
to 7:00 p.m.

Senior Center News
The Vernonia Friendship Jamboree will be
coming up soon, so plan on enjoying the Logger
Breakfast, here at the senior center on both Sat-
urday and Sunday. In addition to being a smart
way to start a busy day, this annual event is a
benefit for Vernonia Cares Food Bank.
Great breakfasts are available every Friday at
the senior center, from 7:30 to 9:00 a.m. Break-
fast for all ages is just $3.50 per person. Maple
bars are made fresh daily for $1.00 each! If you
want maple bars for a group, call 503-429-3912
a day or two ahead and place your order.
The Thrift Shop will be open during Jam-
boree, too, so don’t forget to check out some
great bargains.
Free blood pressure checks are available on
the 4th Wednesday of each month from 11 a.m.
to noon.
Foot Care is scheduled on the second and
fourth Fridays of each month, at $15 per person.

Lunch is served Monday through Friday at
noon. A $4.00 donation is suggested for those
60 and older, and $5.00 for those under 60. If
you prefer lunch to go, for only $5.00 you can
call ahead and place your order.
The 5 Area Lunch is on the last Monday of
each month, with the Rainier Senior Center
hosting the July get-together
On the last Wednesday of each month, Wau-
na Federal Credit Union makes a good lunch
even better by providing diners with free ice
cream.
Members’ birthdays are celebrated at lunch
on the last Friday of each month.
Assorted breads, rolls and pastries are avail-
able at the Center nearly every day. It’s first-
come, first-served, either free or whatever you
wish to donate.
The senior center Board of Directors meets
on the second Friday of each month at 10 a.m.
in the dining room. If you have questions, sug-
gestions, or just want to know how the center
operates, your attendance is welcome.
Center activities include pinochle on Fridays
from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m., and free Bingo with
lunch each Monday starting at 11:45 a.m. Why
not have fun while you eat lunch?
Needle work, including quilting on Tuesdays
10:30 a.m. to closing. If you’re working on a
quilt, crocheting an afghan, knitting a sweater, or
involved in any other needlework project, bring
your project and enjoy the company of others as
you work.

Senator Betsy Johnson chosen for E-Board
Following the adjournment
of the 2011 Legislative Ses-
sion, Senator Betsy Johnson
(D-Scappoose) was appointed
by Senate President Peter
Courtney to serve on the Emer-
gency Board – commonly
called the “E-Board.” She will
be one of 10 senators and 10
representatives chosen to work
on urgent budget issues that
may arise when the Legislature
is not in session during the
2011-13 biennium.
“It is an honor to be chosen
to serve on the Emergency
Board,” said Johnson, who is
