Spring sports season saw many at state competition
From page 11
team all-league athletes. Good
news about this year’s version
of the Lady Loggers is that only
three seniors graduated, and
the rest of the girls will return as
the core of next year’s team.
The future for softball looks
good.
Baseball – The boys ended
their season on a somewhat
disappointing note. They lost
their last game, but played very
well during the season for such
a young group. Their season
record was 10-11 and their
league record was 10-8. They
finished third in league which
landed them in the league tour-
nament as a home team, host-
ing the Nestucca Bobcats, a
team they had beaten two out
of three times earlier in the sea-
son. One bad inning doomed
the Loggers, and the Bobcats
went on to a victory and the op-
portunity to plan Knappa for a
berth in the state play-offs.
Several players made one of
the all-league teams and one
was named to the all-state
team. TJ White made first team
all-league, and honorable men-
tion all-state. This is quite an
accomplishment for TJ be-
cause, when a team doesn’t
make the state play-offs, it is
very difficult for a member of
that team to make an all-state
team. Other Loggers making
all-league were Jackson Miller
and Ryan Lawrence, second
team; and Josh Butcher, Jake
Titus, Austin Cutright and Bo
Clark honorable mention all-
league. With all but TJ return-
ing for next year, the Loggers
look to be very competitive in
baseball again next year.
Track – The track team did
not have enough members to
be competitive on the team lev-
el, however, they did very well
on the individual level. Six ath-
letes qualified for the state
track meet by placing first or
second in the district track
meet. All of these six placed at
some level at the state meet.
Jacob Stevens led the Loggers
at the district and state meets,
qualifying in three events and
placing in three events. Jacob
placed sixth in the high jump,
sixth in the 200 and, with Dali-
bor Kufa, Lane Sullivan, and
Tanner Faber, the 4x100 relay
team placed fourth. Nathan
ELSIE “DONNAMAE” BRINKLY
Elsie “Donnamae” Brinkly,
69, Hillsboro, died May 30,
2011. A memorial service was
held June 10 at the Zion
Lutheran Church in Hillsboro.
Mrs. Brinkly was born Janu-
ary 8, 1942, in Portland, to
Robert and Irene (Stevens)
Hartrampf. She graduated from
Hillsboro Union High School in
1960, then attended business
school in Portland.
In 1963, she married David
Brinkly. After his military serv-
ice, they made their home in
Beaverton. In 1972, they
moved to her parents farm on
Wren Rd. She worked at Tek-
tronix, then at Tuality Commu-
nity Hospital for 13 years.
She enjoyed gardening,
shopping and traveling abroad.
She was preceded in death
by her parents.
Survivors include her hus-
band; three sons, Dan Brinkly
of Hillsboro, Jack Brinkly of
Forest Grove, and Doug Brinkly
of Manning; and five grandchil-
dren.
Remembrances are sug-
gested to Washington County
Hospice.
Duyck & VanDeHey Funeral
Home was in charge of
arrangements.
Fleck was an eighth place fin-
isher in the 800 and Samantha
Lindauer was fifth in the 200.
The track team loses Kufa and
Faber but returns the remain-
der of the team, and should be
competitive for the upcoming
year.
Equestrian – Brianna Carr
and McKenzie Tarkalson led
the equestrian team. Brianna
set an OSET district record in
the keyhole event and also
qualified for state in barrel rac-
ing. McKenzie and Brianna
also went to state in the bi-
wrangle event. Both girls re-
ceived 4-year awards in Eques-
trian. This is given only to those
athletes who have lettered in
their sport for four years.
Golf – For the first time in
several years no one on the
golf team qualified for state.
The golfers were led by Jacob
Alf and Paul Whiteman. Paul
also received a 4-year award in
golf, lettering his freshman
through senior years.
Middle School – Track is of-
fered only in the spring for mid-
dle school athletes and the
turn-out was very good. Justin
Ward, the middle school head
coach has always done a fan-
tastic job. Justin had seventy
athletes compete in Middle
School track and field. One of
the more outstanding athletes
was Jarrett White, who placed
first in the district in the 100. At
the Middle School state track
meet in LaPine, with 55 other
schools in attendance, the sev-
enth grade White placed sec-
ond in the 100. Other outstand-
ing middle school athletes in-
clude Daniel Rice, second in
the 800, and Megan Sullivan,
third in the 100 and second in
the 200. Megan placed in the
top six in every event she en-
tered this season.
