tion, and the cost of the admin-
istration would be pro-rated to
the city. In this way the city
maintains its own police de-
partment, but pays a fraction of
the cost of administration, ac-
cording to the amount of time
required for the administration
to be carried out by the Sheriff.
The employees are county em-
ployees contracted to the city.
Sometimes
neighboring
cities will contract with smaller
towns to provide law enforce-
ment services in those towns,
but a city like Vernonia is so far
apart from other cities the sher-
iff would be a better match for
those services if the city was
looking for a contract relation-
ship with another government
entity.
The only other option for
cities is to do as Vernonia,
Clatskanie, Rainier, St. Helens,
Scappoose and Columbia City
have done and that is to pro-
vide for your own individual po-
lice department.
