forcement system in our county and come up with a recommen-
dation on how to fill those gaps.
The committee recommended strengthening the sheriff’s office
through additional taxes as the only possible way to raise the rev-
enue needed to fill those gaps. The committee also recommend-
ed polling the citizens of Columbia County to find out what was
most important to them. And you know what the citizens who were
polled told us? Exactly what you would expect:
• They want city police and area fire departments to be able to
depend on the Sheriff’s Office for backup and assistance,
• And they want adequate response times and investigation of
crimes outside city limits, because they know that lawlessness
outside the city affects citizens no matter where they live in this
county.
I’d like to address these two issues.
First, every single police officer and deputy in this county is ac-
customed to taking risks and facing hazardous situations alone be-
cause cover is often too far away. Many police officers in our cities
are the only officers on patrol and frequently depend on sheriff’s
deputies for assistance and backup. But when we typically have
only one or none available to fill that role, it is often more expedi-
ent not to wait. But, as we saw
earlier this year, the results of

this can be catastrophic.
Additionally, area fire depart-
