The committee recommended strengthening the sheriff’s office through additional taxes as the only possible way to raise the rev- enue needed to fill those gaps. The committee also recommend- ed polling the citizens of Columbia County to find out what was most important to them. And you know what the citizens who were polled told us? Exactly what you would expect: • They want city police and area fire departments to be able to depend on the Sheriff’s Office for backup and assistance, • And they want adequate response times and investigation of crimes outside city limits, because they know that lawlessness outside the city affects citizens no matter where they live in this county. I’d like to address these two issues. First, every single police officer and deputy in this county is ac- customed to taking risks and facing hazardous situations alone be- cause cover is often too far away. Many police officers in our cities are the only officers on patrol and frequently depend on sheriff’s deputies for assistance and backup. But when we typically have only one or none available to fill that role, it is often more expedi- ent not to wait.
