Donate to Plant, Book & Art Sale Banks Curves food drive now running
The Friends of the Banks
Public Library are gearing up
for their Annual Plant, Book
and Art Sale. The sale will in-
clude local crafts and garden
art, in addition to a broad selec-
tion of plants and used books.
The sale will be held at
Schlegel Hall in Sunset Park on
Friday, May 6 from 3:00 to 7:00
p.m. and Saturday, May 7 from
9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. This sale
is a perfect opportunity for last
minute Mother’s Day shopping.
Plants are coming from local
nurseries and gardeners, and
will include vegetable starts,
annuals, perennials, planters,
herbs and trees. The Friends
always strive to have some un-
usual varieties available. All are
offered at reasonable prices,
and the Friends receive a por-
tion of all sales.
Books for all levels of read-
ers will be offered for sale as
well as some videos and other
materials. Items for sale will in-
clude private donations as well
as withdrawn library materials.
If you wish to donate plants
or books for the sale, please
contact the Banks Public Li-
brary at 503-324-1382.
The Plant, Book and Art
sale is a major fundraising ac-
tivity for the Friends of the
Banks Public Library. The
Friends’ funds are used by the
library to purchase bestsellers
and current titles, CDs, DVDs,
equipment and programs for
the library throughout the year.
The Friends fund a weekly Sto-
ry Time for preschool children,
a summer reading program for
early readers through teens,
and provide books for the
Banks Community Auction.
County seeks input on draft Road
Maintenance Work Program
Washington County would
like to hear from the public by
April 22 about the DRAFT 2011
Road Maintenance Work Pro-
gram. Comments may be sub-
mitted using the online form at
www.co.washington.or.us/LUT/
Divisions/Operations/Pro

gram-2010.cfm, by e-mail at lu
tops@co.washington.or.us, or
by calling the Operations and
Maintenance Division at 503-
846-ROAD (846-7623).
Each year, the Department
of Land Use and Transporta-
tion prepares a road mainte-
nance work plan for approval
by the Washington County
Board of Commissioners. The
plan identifies maintenance ac-
tivities that preserve the pub-
lic's investment in the county's
transportation infrastructure,
providing the highest level of
service possible within the re-
sources available.
During the month of April,
Curves of Banks will participate
in the 13th Annual Curves Food
Drive to collect non-perishable
food and cash donations to
benefit their local food bank.
Current members who make a
$30 donation or an equivalent
donation of food are eligible to
receive a Curves reusable
Food Drive grocery bag. And,
from April 4-17, Curves will
waive the membership fee for
new members who donate a
bag of non-perishable food or
make a minimum donation of
$30.
“Our goal is to top the dona-
tion that we made last year,”
said a Curves of Banks staff
member. This is a great oppor-
tunity for the members of our
Curves community to help
strengthen the Banks commu-
nity, too. Everything that our
members donate at our club
will benefit local families in
need.”
In addition to the food and
monetary donations that each
gym collects, Curves Interna-
tional is offering gyms the op-
portunity to win cash prizes for
their local food banks. Prizes
will be awarded to clubs with
the most food collected, clubs
who beat their 2010 donation
level by the largest amount and
to two randomly selected clubs
drawn from all the clubs who
enter the contest. Curves clubs
have donated more than 61
million pounds of food in the
U.S. and Canada since 2004.
“The past few years have
been difficult for many fami-
lies,” said Curves founder Di-
ane Heavin, “Curves annual
Food Drive is one way that
everyone in the Banks area can
make a real difference for a lo-
cal family that is struggling. We
encourage everyone, not just
our members or those who are
thinking about joining our gym,
to make a cash donation or
drop off a bag of non-perish-
able food items in April.”
