Obituary
BARBARA JOYCE HARMON
Barbara Joyce Harmon, 67,
Vernonia, died March 5, 2011.
A memorial service will be held
on March 20, at 3:00 p.m. at
Grace Christian Fellowship,
7325 N. Bank, Portland. Later
a celebration of life service will
be held in Vernonia.
Mrs. Harmon was born July
12, 1943, in Portland, to
Charles and Juanita (Willis)
Shaw. She was raised in Port-
land, graduating from Roo-
sevelt High School in 1961.
In 1970, she married James
Harmon. They made their
home in Portland. She was a
waitress and cook.
She enjoyed hunting, camp-
ing, and shopping.
She was preceded in death
by her husband; and a sister,
Patricia Houl’e.
Survivors include two sons,
Walter Willey of Vernonia and
James Harmon of Myrtle Point;
three daughters, Patricia
Leonette Vaughn of Molalla,
Bobby Joe Sumpter of Port-
land and Tabitha Leigh Goer-
gen of Longview, Washington;
14 grandchildren and 16 great-
grandchildren.
Tualatin Valley Funeral Al-
ternatives of Hillsboro was in
charge of arrangements.
WINSTON “WIN” M. HART-
ZOG
Winston “Win” M. Hartzog,
86, Phoenix, died February 22,
2011. A service will be held
March 24, at 1:00 p.m., at
Northridge Center, 3737 S. Pa-
cific Hwy., Medford.
Mr. Hartzog was born Octo-
ber 28, 1924, in Vernonia, to
Bernard and Clodie Hartzog.
He was raised in Longview,
Washington. He served in the
U.S. Marine Corps during
World War II. After the war, he
worked for over 30 years in
Hawaii as foreman on the
Pu’uwa’awa’a Ranch. He later
lived in Maine, San Diego, Cal-
ifornia, and Medford.
He was preceded in death
by his longtime partner, Elaine
Speare; and a grandson.
Survivors include two sons,
Scott Landwehr of Medford,
and Jeff Landwehr of Bend.
FREDRICK A. ROEDIGER
Fredrick Alexander Roedi-
ger, 92, St. Helens, died March
2, 2011. A funeral was held

March 9. Interment was in Ver-
nonia Memorial Cemetery.
Mr. Roediger was born April
9, 1918, in Thomas, to Ed-
mund G. and Marie (Stein-
hauer) Roediger. His family
moved to Treharne, where
they ran a filling station.
In 1942, he married Rosalie,
Driscoll. They made their
home in Vernonia. He served
in the U.S. Marine Corps dur-
ing World War II. He worked
for Vernonia Golf Course, the
railroad, then worked for O-A
Lumber Company for 20
years. In 1958, the family
moved to St. Helens, where he
spent 20 years in the Columbia
County Sheriff’s Department,
as a Chief Deputy, then as a
Captain. He retired in 1978.
He enjoyed gunsmithing, re-
loading, coin collection, gar-
dening and clamming, along
with camping, fishing and
hunting at Magone Lake.
He was preceded in death
by two brothers, John and
Bud; and a sister, Ruth Ozias.
Survivors include his wife;
one son, Paul; three daugh-
ters, Laurel Fowler, Kathy
Miller, and Sherry Doty; one
brother, Edmond G.; eight
grandchildren; 13 great-grand-
children; nieces and nephews.
Remembrances are sug-
gested to the St. Helens Sr.
Center for the SNAP Program.
Columbia Funeral Home in
St. Helens was in charge of
arrangements.
Mr. Schmidlin was born Oc-
tober 11, 1928, in Vernonia, to
Frank Joseph and Pauline
Willamina
(Smejkal)
Schmidlin. He was raised in
Vernonia and attended Ver-
nonia High School. He served
in the U.S. Army. He had
worked as a dairy farmer, a
sawmill operator and later for
Stimson Lumber Company for
11 years, until he retired.
In 1996, he married Hilda
Elvira White. They made their
home in Aloha, before moving
to Cornelius in 2005.
He was preceded in death
by his wife.
Survivors include his son,
Timothy John of Cornelius; two
sisters, Theresa Marie Seal of
Beaverton, and Francis Keag-
bine of Portland; one grand-
son; nieces and nephews.
Remembrances are sug-
gested to the Vistitation
Catholic Church.

al Home in Forest Grove was
in charge of arrangements.
JOHN THOMAS SCHMIDLIN
John Thomas Schmidlin,
82, Cornelius, died March 12,
2011. A funeral mass was held
today at 11:00 a.m. at Visita-
tion Catholic Church, in Ver-
boort, with Fr. Scott Vandehey,
celebrant. Private interment
was at Buxton Cemetery.
ROBERT G. VANDOMELEN
Robert “Bob” George Van-
domelen, 93, Banks, died
March 6, 2011. A funeral mass
was held March 11 at St. Fran-
cis Catholic Church in Roy.
Vault interment took place at
St. Francis Catholic Cemetery.
Mr. Vandomelen was born
November 3, 1917, in Banks,
to William and Minnie (Van-
derzanden) Vandomelen. He
was raised on the family farm
and attended St. Francis
Robert G. Vandomelen
Catholic Grade School. He
served in the U.S. Army.
In 1946, he married Patricia
Hermens. They made their
home in Banks. He was a
farmer, raising strawberries,
grains and livestock. He
worked at Tektronix from 1959
until retiring in 1981.
He enjoyed gardening, golf,
clam digging, woodworking,
the outdoors, fishing, dancing
and traveling.
He was preceded in death
by six siblings.
Survivors include his wife;
two sons, Richard of Forest
Grove and Bill of Banks; four
daughters, Linda Jensen and
Lois Miller, both of Portland,
Shirley Kalhar of Troutdale,
Beverly Vandecoevering of
Canby; two brothers, Bernard
and Tony; two sisters, Mildred
Bernards and Dorothy Neilson;
eight grandchildren and seven
great-grandchildren.
Remembrances are sug-
gested to St. Francis of Assisi
Catholic School.

BONNIE SUE UERLING
Bonnie Sue Uerling, 56,
Birkenfeld, died March 10,
2011. Services were held
March 16 at Birkenfeld Com-
munity Church with Pastor Ter-
ry D. Willis officiating, followed
by committal services at Fish-
hawk Cemetery.
Mrs. Uerling was born July
31, 1954, in Visalia, California,
to Bennie Brook and Johanna
Rose (McCarty) Finnell. She
graduated from Lodi High
School in 1972, then attended
Marylhurst College in Lake Os-
wego.
In 1979, she married
William Henry Uerling. They
made their home in Royal City,
Washington, for 10 years, be-
fore moving to Birkenfeld. She
was a homemaker.
She enjoyed bingo, shop-
ping, writing poems, letters
and thoughts, which she
shared with family and friends.
She was preceded in death
by her parents.
Survivors include her hus-
band; five sons, Jody Uerling
of Newberry, Massachusetts,
John Uerling of Clatskanie, Bil-
ly Uerling II of Birkenfeld,
Charley Uerling of Oregon
City, and Clinton Uerling of
Elsie; two daughters, Johanna
Uerling of Birkenfeld, and
Samantha Uerling of Elsie;
one brother, Bennie Finnell of
Rainier; three sisters, Jody
Finnell Dalla-Gasperina of
Portland, Connie Siebert of
Vernonia,
and
Clarissa
Keenan of Brush Prairie,
Wash.; eight grandchildren;
nieces and nephews.
Remembrances are sug-
gested to The Birkenfeld Com-
munity Church, or the Mist-
Birkenfeld Fire Dept.
Groulx Family Mortuary was
