The INDEPENDENT, February 3, 2011 Help make 2011 Jamboree great Meetings are starting for planning of the 2011 Vernonia Friendship Jamboree. If you’d like to be part of making Jam- boree happen, or just want to know more about what’s going on, come to a meeting. Meetings will be held on the second Wednesday of each month, starting February 9, at 7:00 p.m. at City Hall. Welcome Additions Senior Center News Since January was Volunteer Month, we want to say “Thank you” to the many volunteers who make it possible for this small town to operate a vital senior citizens center. Instead of trying to thank each volunteer by name, we’ll just give an idea of the num- ber of tasks they perform and the invaluable service they provide: All of the officers and directors elected by the center’s members are volunteers; volunteers help in the kitchen, dining room and thrift shop; regular (and some extraordinary) building maintenance is performed by volunteers; volunteers pick up and deliver the bread and pastries here to help local people stretch their budgets; debris is removed from the parking lot by volunteers; volunteers deliver Meals on Wheels to home-bound folks; and weekly enter- tainment is provided by volunteers. If all of that isn’t sufficient, some businesses and organizations also volunteer goods or serv- ices. Please accept our heartfelt thanks for all you do. Speaking of volunteers, they process all of the donations to the thrift shop, but the center doesn’t have a clothes washer and dry- er. Please be sure your donations are clean and usable. Remem- ber, everything in the thrift shop is half-price during the first week of each month! The center’s special Valentine’s Day lunch will be on Wednes- day, February 9. There will be a prize for the couple who have been married the longest, and some other prizes may be in the works. Columbia County Public Health has plenty of flu vaccine available and is encouraging people to get their shots if they haven’t already. Immunity be- gins about two weeks after a shot, which would protect peo- ple during the winter/spring flu season. Anyone wishing an appoint- ment or more information can call Mary Altenheim, immuniza- tion coordinator at Columbia County Public Health, 503-397- We have moved Carter Cutlery Murray Carter ABS Master Bladesmith 503-447-1029 22097 NW West Union Road Hillsboro OR, 97124 www.cartercutlery.com murry@cartercutlery.com 4651, ext. 2016.
