Page 12 The INDEPENDENT, December 2, 2010 Between the Bookends By Susan Cackler, Library Assistant Banks Public Library Winter is coming in a bit early but with lots of enthusi- asm. The library is a fabulous source of indoor entertain- ment. A good book or movie can take your mind off even the worst winter weather. Remember, if it is icy or snowy, be sure to call the li- brary at 503 324-1382, before you come, to make sure we’re open. Also, most items can be renewed over the phone or via the internet. If you are unable to return items on time because of weather conditions, let the library know. A big thank you to everyone who turned out to make our third bookfair a success. Especially, thank you to all of the band kids who played such lovely music on Saturday. (And to their parents for driving them.) Join us for craft night Wednesday, December 8, from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m. in the community room. Enjoy some lively conversation while you work on your fa- vorite craft. Come and meet some new friends or visit with old ones while using the library’s work space and enjoying some light snacks. You may find knitters, scrapbookers, quilters and maybe even a tatter or two. Do you have a youngster who needs something to do on Wednesday morning? Story time at the library could be the answer to what to do. Our reader, Miss Cathy, picks a few stories around a theme each week and shares these stories with the children in an enter- taining, engaging way. Join us for Preschool Story Time on Wednesdays at 10:15 a.m. in the community room of the library. Story Time is designed for children aged three to six, but younger siblings are welcome. The themes for December are: December 1: Poky Little Turtles December 8: Bear Hugs December 15: Happy Holidays! There won’t be any storytime on December 22 or 29, but it will return on January 5. porter who has uncovered strong evidence that a lob- byist has formed a powerful group called the Friday club. Its members include high-ranking men inside the government. The reporter fears the club is powerful enough to topple the government. Then the reporter and his family are killed and Van Buren is gunned down and all traces of the club are erased. Kirk Mc- Garvey, legendary spy and father-in-law to Van Buren, is soon drawn into the most dangerous investigation of his career, the stakes of which could destabilize the U.S. government and shake the world. Fall of Giants by Ken Follett. Follett is writing a trilo- gy that will chronicle the dramatic events of the twen- tieth century. This novel, the first of the trilogy, follows five interrelated families from five different countries through World War I, the Russian Revolution and the struggle for women’s suffrage. The novel moves from Washington, D.C., to St. Petersburg, and from the grit and danger of a coal mine to the glamour of a palace. Follett brings the century alive and shows historical events through the passion of the people who lived them. The Friends of the Banks Public Library can always use your support. You can make a tax deductible do- nation, become a member, or volunteer. Money that the Friends raise helps the library purchase Cultural Passes, upgrade equipment and purchase books and movies. Also, we take donations of books that are in good condition. On the shelf: The Art of Devotion by Samantha Bruce-Benjamin. In this debut novel, the dark side of human nature is re- vealed as four women share a tale of love, obsession and betrayal that binds them forever. It starts when Adora loses her older brother, whom she had loved ex- clusively. Years later, she fills the gap he left with an- other couple’s daughter, Genevieve. At first, Genevi- eve is thrilled to be included in the older woman’s life, but gradually she realizes she is caught in a web of lies and illusion. Banks Public Library: 111 Market Street.
