A funeral mass was held Novem- ber 13 at Visitation Catholic Church in Verboort, followed by burial at Visitation Catholic Cemetery. Mr. Duyck was born October 2, 1938, in Roy, to George and Cecilia (VanDyke) Duyck. He was raised on the family farm in Roy, and graduated from Banks High School in 1956. He served in the U.S. Army. In 1961, he married Carolyn Herb. They made their home in Beaverton before moving to their farm in Cornelius in 1966. He worked briefly at Tektronix before farming. He retired in 2000, but still worked on the family farm. He enjoyed his church, camp- ing, visiting casinos with his sib- lings, the outdoors, fishing, clam- ming, woodworking, traveling, his family and his cat, Tiger. He was preceded in death by his wife; and three brothers, Rol- lie, LeRoy and Kenny. Survivors include his three sons, Scott of Beaverton, Craig and Tim, both of Forest Grove; two daughters, Cheryl Morgan of Hillsboro, and Lisa Davis of Port- land; 10 siblings, Lloyd, Gary, Steve, Audrey Hertel, Lorna Newby, Loraine Klein, Dorothy Umeda, Susie Peterson, Sharon Racine and Marilyn Grover; and eight grandchildren. A funer- al mass was held November 15 at St. Francis Catholic Church in Roy, followed by vault interment at St. Francis Catholic Cemetery. Mr. Hertel was born August 26, 1922, in Roy, to Frank and Gertrude (Gellings) Hertel. He was raised on the family farm and graduated from high school in Hillsboro in 1940. He served in the U.S. Army. In 1946, he married Loretta Vandervelden. They made their home on the family farm and op- erated a dairy farm for over 30 years, before moving to their present home in Roy in 1985. He enjoyed traveling and had visited 48 of the 50 states, as well as traveling abroad. He was an avid sports fan. He was preceded in death by six siblings. Survivors include his wife; four sons, Don of Banks, Charlie of Forest Grove, Myron of Vancou- ver, Washington, and Larry of Al- bany; two daughters, Madeline Boon of North Plains and Mary Ann Meeuwsen of Banks; two sisters, Helen Fessler and Gertrude Duyck; 16 grandchil- dren; and 11 great-grandchil- dren. Duyck & VanDeHey Funeral Home was in charge of arrange- ments. CHARLES “SONNY” W. SMITH Charles “Sonny” William Charles “Sonny” W. Smith Smith, 70, Hillsboro, died No- vember 5, 2010. At his request, there will be no service. Mr. Smith was born January 29, 1940, in Paragould, Arkan- sas, to George Avon Smith and Myrle Smith-Jones. Survivors include six children; Teresa Carrico of Lexington, Texas, Terry Santini of Albany, Jenny Ledford of Ponca City, Ok- lahoma, Charles Smith, Jr. of Di- vide, Colorado, Kim Pope of Greenfield Park, New York, Dean Smith of Vernonia; one brother, Harold Dean Smith of Woodland, California; two sisters, Glenda Crites of North Plains, and Leona Crites of Huntington; 12 grand- children; and two great-grand- children. Tualatin Valley Funeral Alter- natives of Hillsboro was in charge of arrangements. DAVID GEORGE SPIERING David George Spiering, 84, Forest Grove, died November 8, 2010. A funeral mass was held November 12 at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church in Forest Grove. Private committal was at Moun- tainview Memorial Gardens in Forest Grove. Mr. Spiering was born August 15, 1926, in Roy, to George and Mary (Vanderzanden) Spiering. He was raised on the family farm in Roy and graduated from Banks High School in 1944. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. In 1948, he married Beulah. They made their home in Forest Grove. He worked for Stimson Lumber for 21 years, then in 1968 went to work for NW Natur- al Gas until he retired in 1989 as a supervisor. He enjoyed sports, hunting, fishing, camping, and flying. He and his wife enjoyed traveling in their motorhome. He was preceded in death by four brothers, Richard, Jimmy, Herb, and Donald; and one great-grandson. Survivors include his wife; one son, Dan of Lake Oswego; four daughters, Leah McDonald of Aloha, Fauna VanBlarcom of Forest Grove, Judy Brumfield of Oregon City, and Jill Krueger of Gig Harbor, Washington; a broth- er, Norman (who died several hours later); a sister, Evelyn La- Bella of Portland; 11 grandchil- dren; and seven great-grandchil- dren. JANE ANNETTE WHITE MARCELLA G. VANDEHEY Marcella Geneva Vandehey, 95, Forest Grove, died Novem- ber 7, 2010. A funeral mass was held November 11 at St. Francis Catholic Church in Roy, followed by burial at St. Francis Catholic Cemetery. Mrs. Vandehey was born Au- gust 31, 1915, in Gales Creek, to Philip Kalsch and Barbara Franck. She graduated from For- est Grove High School in 1933. In 1935, she married Tony Vandehey. They made their home in Wilkesboro before mov- ing to their farm south of Roy in 1947. They raised vegetable crops. In 2003, she moved to Forest Grove. She enjoyed farm life, cook- ing, canning and keeping a clean house. She was an avid card player and Jumble Puzzle solver. She was preceded in death by her husband; and five siblings. Survivors include seven sons; Gary of Roy, Monte of Salem, Jane Annette White, 47, Clatskanie, died November 8, 2010. A funeral mass was held November 12 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Vernonia, fol- lowed by burial at Vernonia Memorial Cemetery. Mrs. White was born March 20, 1963, in Vernonia, to Joe and Genevieve (Lardy) Dennis. She was raised in Vernonia. In 1987, she married Steven White. They made their home in Vernonia before moving to Clatskanie in 1989. She was a homemaker. She enjoyed gardening, family gatherings, her role as “grand- ma”, and was an accomplished cook. She was preceded in death by her parents; and a brother, Bryan Dennis. Survivors include her hus- band; five children; Clare Kirk- wood of White Salmon, Washing- ton, Jack of Vancouver, Wash., Nathan of Rainier, Arron of Clatskanie, and Jesse of Kimball, Nebraska; six brothers, Myron Dennis, Donald Dennis, Milton Dennis, Marvin Dennis, Loren Dennis, and Lonnie Dennis; three sisters, Mary Ann Shaw, Shirley Cochran, and Carmela Kelly; and eight grandchildren.
