Safety belt Blitz focuses on children
The Columbia County Sher-
iff’s Office is participating in the
next Oregon Three Flags Blitz
in conjunction with the observa-
tion of National Child Passen-
ger Safety Week later in Sep-
tember. The Blitz itself runs
from August 30 to September
12.
Sheriff’s deputies will be out
on overtime focusing on safety
belt enforcement along with
other hazardous traffic viola-
tions. The goal is to encourage
voluntary compliance with the
law, with a particular focus on
child passenger safety.
Child safety seats reduce,
by 71 percent, the likelihood of
an infant (under one-year-old)
being killed in a vehicle crash
and reduce the mortality rate
for toddlers involved in a crash
by 54 percent.
As a reminder, Oregon’s
Child Restraint law states that
any child weighing less than 40
pounds (regardless of age)
must be properly restrained in a
child safety seat. A child under
one year of age or weighing
less than 20 pounds must be
restrained in a rear-facing seat.
A child over 40 pounds but un-
der age 8 (or less than 4’9” tall)
must be restrained in a booster
seat that elevates the child so
that the lap/shoulder belts fit
