Jake Lee and Brody James
DeSpain were born July 28,
2010, to Megan and Jeremy
Despain of Snoqualmie, Wash-
ington. Jake Lee weighed 6
pounds, 9 ounces and Brody
James weighed 5 pounds, 9
ounces.
They have joined their sis-
ters, Madison and Katelyn, at
the family home.
Grandparents are Ritch and
Sharon DeSpain of Spokane,
Wash., and Nancy and James
MacKerrow of Snoqualmie,
Wash.
Louise Hamnett of Vernonia
is the boys’ great-grandmother.

She weighed 7 pounds, 12

long.

P ROPHET S HARING P
Hey, Seniors…you don’t want to miss the an-
nual Vernonia Senior Center Picnic tomorrow,
August 20, in the covered picnic area at Ander-
son Park. The senior center will provide ham-
burgers and hot dogs with all the fixings, plus
beverages. The rest is potluck, so bring along
your favorite summer potluck dish. There will be
entertainment by the Golden Oldies, a drawing
(originally scheduled for Jamboree) will be held
for the garden fountain, and plenty of time to chat
with others. In other words, join us for an enjoy-
able day starting at 10 a.m. and continuing until
we’re ready to leave.
Change Alert: The center’s floors will be re-
done over the Labor Day weekend, requiring a
change from the regular hours. Including the
thrift shop, it will close at 1:00 p.m. on Thursday,
September 2, and remain closed through Sep-
tember 6. Everything will reopen on Tuesday,
September 7, with regular hours.
Except for the closure on Sept. 3 and Sept. 6,
lunch is served Monday through Friday at noon.
A $4.00 donation is suggested for those 60 and
older, and $5.00 for those under 60. You may
also order lunch to go, for only $5.00, by calling
ahead and placing your order. On the last
Wednesday of each month, Wauna Federal
Credit Union provides diners with free ice cream.
If you enjoy bingo, join us for lunch and free
bingo on Mondays, starting at 11:45 a.m. Also,
on the last Monday of each month, seniors from
Clatskanie, Rainier, St. Helens, Scappoose and
Vernonia may join others at whichever center is
hosting the “5 Area Lunch.” If at least three peo-
ple participate, CC Rider will provide a bus. Each
person pays their own transportation and lunch.
St. Helens is hosting the August 30 lunch; the
September 27 lunch will be in Clatskanie.
Tuesdays, starting at 10:30 a.m., needlework
hobbyists enjoy the company of others as they
work on their projects. On the fourth Wednesday
of each month, free blood pressure checks are
available from 11 a.m. to noon. Fridays feature
games starting at 1:00 p.m.
The Senior Center Thrift Shop is open Mon-
day through Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.
The whole month of August features a half price
clearance sale on EVERYTHING! It’s a great
time to check for back-to-school needs before
going out of town.
The thrift shop also has wheelchairs available
for rent, call Pauline Coffman for information,
and unused canes are needed.
The center also wants to thank Sally Harrison
for repainting the thrift shop sign, it‘s a great
help.
Foot Care is scheduled on the second and
fourth Fridays of each month, at $15 per person.

New hours at St. Helens Transfer Station
Due to economic conditions,
the Columbia County Board of
Commissioners approved clos-
ing the Columbia County
Transfer Station on Sundays.,
Beginning September 12,
the Transfer Station will be
closed every Sunday until fur-
ther notice.
The Sunday closure was
recommended to the Board of
Commissioners by the County
Solid Waste Advisory Commit-
tee in order to reduce opera-
tional costs, and because of
relatively low public usage on
Sundays.
The new Transfer Station
hours of operation will be Mon-
day through Saturday 8:00 a.m.
to 5:00 p.m.
