The INDEPENDENT, August 19, 2010 Page 21 Can You Dig It? From page 6 Water conservation is al- ways important – especially if your well is dry and you are hauling water. Water those things most precious to you, save and use kitchen water from rinsing dishes, neither small amounts of soap or bits of food will harm anything. Pay special attention to plants close to house walls, which serve as heats sinks and are great for heat loving tomatoes and egg- plants, but will dry very quickly in the sun. Mulch is the other compo- nent of water conservation. Last year’s mulch is the surface of the soil this year, so you have to add more. Everything should have at least two-four inches of mulch after planting, up to six is not uncalled for in certain water lovers, like corn. The problem then becomes one of making sure the soil is getting water, not just the mulch. I find the best way to check is to stick my finger in the soil and feel around in several places. Lawns, on the other hand, are naturally in their dor- mant period. If you must try to maintain a green lawn, 1” (or a tuna can full) per week is plen- ty of water for lawns at this time of year. Let them go dry, and when the evil weeds show up, shoot them on a hot day with glyphosate (RoundUp) which is very effective if administered this way.
