The INDEPENDENT, August 19, 2010 Page 13 Banks school board discusses filing $25.98 million bond measure The Banks School District Board of Directors held their regular monthly meeting, on August 9, to discuss an agenda of issues pursuant to allocation of bonds, hiring approvals and giving medications for students. The board held a work ses- sion prior to the meeting, iron- ing out minor details of Resolu- tion no. 1011-01, which calls for a bond measure election. If passed on November 2 this measure will allow the Banks School District to sell no more than $25.98 million in bonds for major renovations that may in- clude the replacement of the current junior high and high school facilities. The Board stressed that the condition of campus facilities, mainly the junior high school, is a major concern. Recent archi- tectural and engineering sur- veys conclude, among other issues, that the classroom sec- tion would not withstand even a moderate earthquake. The board indicated that, at the very least, renovations are needed to upgrade facilities to meet current safety standards and to support new graduation re- quirements. Other campus needs include security, traffic flow, parking, lighting and im- proved emergency vehicle ac- cess to the elementary school. The estimated property tax in- crease for the bond is expected to be $145 per year for each $100,000 of assessed property value. The board also approved hir- ing Heather Canapary to teach Science and Secondary Math, and Kristina Bunn as an ele- mentary school Physical Activi- ty Aide. During the superintendent’s report, Jim Foster stated sup- port for a specific teacher train- ing course for teaching non- English speaking students in a regular classroom, as well as differentiating instruction for all students. This class is sched- uled for later this year. Also, the Board approved policies re- garding the administering of in- jectable/ non-injectable medi- cines. Appreciation was expressed from members of the board to Chairman Kathy Edison and Foster for their diligent service regarding the recently finished Resolution (1011-01) and con- tinued support in the City of Banks. The Board meeting was quite brief, starting at 7:00 p.m. and adjourning at 7:25 p.m. To be informed personally, attend the next regular meeting For the best service, selection & value, Go to the SOURCE… eco S O URCE™ The symbol of the BRAND S O URCE ® commitment to provide high efficiency appliances.
