Page 16 The INDEPENDENT, August 5, 2010 Schultz dies in log truck accident Toddlers are watching too much TV Vernonian Joshua Schultz, 33, died July 22, 2010, when the log truck he was driving left Hwy. 47 near Stoney Point Road, hitting a tree and a tele- phone pole. When the truck stopped, the logs shifted and crushed the cab. Schultz was pronounced dead at the scene. Also in the truck with Schultz was his 10-year-old son, Seth, who was extricated from the wreck by Vernonia Fire Depart- ment personnel before being taken by LifeFlight to Legacy Emanuel Hospital. He was re- leased two days later. See obituary on this page. From page 12 are based on data collected in the 2006 and 2007 Oregon Pregnancy Risk Assessment Monitoring System, in which a representative sample of women were selected shortly after giving birth and inter- viewed three to four months lat- er, then again when their ba- bies were 2 years old. One lim- itation of the report is that the survey estimated only the quantity of TV and video watch- ing; it did not assess the quality of the programming or address other forms of media such as computers or video games. A parent and child viewing quality programming together would plausibly be of higher value than the child watching lower-quality programming alone, according to the report.
