Sheriff’s Office completes search and rescue training May 21-23, the Columbia County Sheriff’s Office Search and Rescue Team conducted its annual overnight training at Camp Wilkerson County Park, on Apiary Road. The training scenario includ- ed a mock search for two miss- ing juveniles who wandered away from a campsite. Basic tracking, map and compass, and GPS training were incorpo- rated into the training search. Twenty-six volunteers and two deputies participated in the weekend event. The volunteers went through periods of sunshine, rain, even hail, throughout the training. “I’m so proud of this group, they worked hard all weekend in all types of weather. It shows the dedication they have to their community,” Moyer said. “I really want to thank the County Parks Department,” Moyer said, “Camp Wilkerson is a beautiful place with a vari- ety of camping facilities and hiking trails, on top of that, the park hosts are very friendly. For a close-to-home trip, I recom- mend that everyone visit this park.” Search and Rescue volun- teers have to complete a mini- mum of thirty hours annually, to complete a certification process for the Oregon State Sheriffs’ Association. The training sub- jects range from Basic Search Techniques, Tracking and First Aid, to Incident Command, Ra- dio Procedure, and Map and Compass. “In Columbia County we typically start this training process in January with one or two training classes a month.
