The INDEPENDENT, April 15, 2010 DEQ launches web Carbon Calculator A new interactive tool on the Oregon Department of Environ- mental Quality (DEQ) website lets residents measure their carbon footprint and discover ways to improve it. The Oregon Carbon Calculator, at http://w ww.deq.state.or.us/programs/ sustainability/carboncalcula- tor.htm calculates all direct and indirect greenhouse gas emis- sions from personal transporta- tion, household energy use, and consumption of food, goods and services. Find out how your house- hold’s carbon footprint com- pares to households of similar size and income. And learn how you can take action to re- duce your carbon footprint from a number of specific ideas and strategies. The Oregon Carbon Calcu- lator is made possible through Oregon DEQ’s support of the CoolClimate Network, a pro- gram of the University of Cali- fornia, Berkeley, and through fi- nancial support by the Califor- nia Air Resources Board and the CoolCalifornia.org partner- ship. Oregon DEQ selected this calculator for its approach and depth in calculating human im- pacts to climate change. Included in the places hit were Kate’s cafe, Vernonia Service Station owned by George Johnson, the Card Room and the Roller Rink. At Kate’s cafe, the cash register was taken but it was found the next day in a mud puddle and some money had slid into the back of it and was recovered. Loss was esti- mated to be about $30. At the serv- ice station and the rink, apparently nothing was taken. At the garage, a window had been broken and in climbing out, the culprits appar- ently dropped two packs of ciga- rettes and two quarters. No infor- mation of loss at the Card Room is available. The county sheriff’s office, state and local police are working on the case. The April 21, 1960, issue of The Vernonia Eagle included the following news story on the front page: The city council at its meeting Monday evening gave considera- tion to a wide variety of items ranging from use of park areas to the authorizing of the purchase of a fingerprint kit for the use of Po- lice Chief A. D. Lolley. Also, a spokesman for some of the local service station operators was present to protest the purchase of tires and other equipment for city owned cars from sources out- side the city. The answer given by the council was that it had been an established policy to deal di- rectly with distributors and that some tires recently purchased lo- cally had not been satisfactory. Reference to the retirement age of police officers and firemen was clarified as follows: the state law requires retirement at age 60, but written request for continuance can be made. The weatherman (up- stairs) hasn’t figured out what he’s sup- posed to do in April yet. Mayhap, he slept in and missed a month. (Yes, I know, it’s maybe and perhaps, but mayhap strength- ens the point.) Since the weather is askew perhaps your body is talking to you and you can’t do anything but reach for an aspirin or a pain pill. Here’s some advice I gave you on August 12, 2004. The ideal temp. for a person’s well-being is between 70 and 73 degrees. Wet, stormy weather will cause your surgical scars to itch, so cream them with anti-itch stuff (I do). A shift in the barom- eter (down) can cause your legs to expand as much as an inch due to the shift in body fluids. Boy, do I know this. The above info. is from a newspaper from 1980. Oh yes, the North Pole is without sun for 186 days a year, so be thankful. Original article was by Pete Cooke. To all the ladies at the Senior Center who entered the Easter Parade and wound up on the front page. It was fun and now my new friends know why I trek back to your fair city. It is rather interesting to listen to the T.V. and learn of all the dif- ferent states that are bucking (thinking of suing the Governmen- tal Body of the U.S.) for the Health Care Bill??? Everybody did not want it. Spring will come, just be patient. I’m in a rush this week, time flies when you’re busy running the clock. drawn.
