The INDEPENDENT, April 15, 2010 OSP seek witnesses to Hwy. 30 fatality Oregon State Police (OSP) troopers are investigating a fa- tal crash involving a pedestrian on Highway 30 at Clatskanie Hill, east of Clatskanie. Troop- ers are asking for the public’s help to develop information from witnesses before or at the time of the crash to help with the investigation. On April 7, shortly after 1:00 p.m. a red 2009 Hyundai Sonata four-door driven by an elderly adult male was west- bound on Highway 30 near milepost 59. The driver report- ed pulling onto the shoulder af- ter he noticed something struck the car’s windshield. The driver walked back and saw a man ly- ing in the ditch along the high- way. Emergency responders said the man was dead. The victim reportedly has a grey beard and was wearing a black jack- Has the rain got you down? You can put a smile on some- one’s face by having them wake up to a flock of flamingos in their yard. Vernonia Boy Scout Troop 201 will be doing their annual fundraiser for sum- mer camp by spreading some color across town. If you are interested in hav- ing a flock of flamingos land somewhere (maybe for a birth- day, anniversary, get well or simply just because) contact Jon Steward at 503-819-2656 with the complete address of where you would like them to be placed (within the city lim- its). A donation to pass the flamingos along is much appre- ciated. Any checks can be made payable to Boy Scout Troop 201. OPI offers help The flamingos are back in town for seniors Rainier Sr. Ctr. seeks donations A non-profit organization is asking for donations of good quality, saleable items to help with the cost of “Meals on Wheels” and lunches, which are provided on a donation ba- sis to low-income senior citi- zens in the Rainier area. Please: No old computers or clothing. Check your attic, garage, or storage unit for items of value to donate to the Rainier Senior Center. Head Start fundraiser = sharp knives “Knife Sharpening with Mas- ter Bladesmith Murray Carter”, a Vernonia Headstart Parent fund activity will be held on one day only, Saturday, May 1, from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. at 981 Fairway Lane, Vernonia (700 yds. north of Wauna at end of Weed Ave.) Knives may be dropped off for later pickup, or stay and watch a master at work. Oregon Project Indepen- dence (OPI) is available to res- idents of Columbia County, thanks to Community Action Team. OPI provides limited in- home services to people 60 and older who need help in or- der to continue living inde- pendently in their homes. Snethens set to celebrate 50th Vernonia Senior Center News High blood pressure is a major health problem for many seniors and too often goes unnoticed. To find out how you’re doing, take advantage of the free blood pressure checks on the 4th Wednes- day of each month from 11 a.m. to noon. The Golden Oldies are a happy respite from most anything that ails you. Every Wednesday they’ll have you smiling, maybe even dancing, with music you’ll recognize from some years past. These senior musicians start gathering before noon and, with a few breaks, play for several hours. If you can afford a buck or two for their transportation costs, it is appreciated. Think about it – friends, food and entertainment – priceless! Lunch is served Monday through Friday at noon. A $3.00 dona- tion is suggested for those 60 and older, and $4.00 for those un- der 60. If you prefer lunch to go, for only $4.00 you can call ahead and place your order. April birthdays will be celebrated on Friday, April 30, and on the last Wednesday of each month, Wauna Federal Credit Union makes a good meal even better by providing diners with free ice cream. On the last Monday of each month, the Five Area Lunch brings together seniors from all five senior centers in Columbia County. If you are unfamiliar with the five areas, the other four are Clatskanie, Rainier, St. Helens and Scappoose. Clatskanie will host this month’s lunch on April 26. For more information, stop in or call. Breakfast is available Fridays at the Senior Center, from 7:30 to 9:00 a.m. at $3.50 per person, regardless of age.
