An alternative to hunting
antlerless animals in August
could be overcome, while pro-
viding a very high quality op-
portunity, by switching the limit-
ed tag numbers allocated for
females to males. The tags
could be split further between
deer and elk and the impact on
any population would be in-
significant. The impact to adult
hunters who compete for tags
in a drawing would also be
hardly detectable. The impact
on the West side of the state for
deer would be moot, since
these tags are mainly over the
counter. Hunting bucks and
bulls in August could be the
hunt of a lifetime for these
youths. We have enough
antlerless youth hunts in this
state; it is time to provide a
quality hunting experience,
without leaving orphaned elk
calves wondering the woods.
It appears that Chinook
salmon populations in the Ne-
halem basin are in bad shape;
ODF&W has been gathering in-
put from the fishing community
regarding proposals that may
affect fishing opportunity.

ODF&W is predicting that the
return run this year will not be
large enough to provide the
number of fish needed to fully
seed the spawning beds with
eggs. Personally I think the
only reasonable decision is a
total closure, we must learn to
draw the line in the sand and
not cross it. It is speculated
that many of our adult Chinook
are being caught in northern
ocean fisheries and this makes
it very difficult for ODF&W to
manage these stocks. Manage
though, we must, and inflicting
more losses will not help these
stocks rebound.
