his district finals match in the
state 5th-6th place match, and
dominated 11-0 to earn the 5th
place medal. Calvin Barnes
brought it all together at the
state tournament and powered
through to a 4th place finish to
end his high school career on a
very positive note. Barnes just
got better with each match and
rose to the occasion and devel-
oped a well-earned cauliflower
ear in the process.
VHS wrestling is an up and
coming sports program. Up
and coming generally wouldn’t
apply to a team that earned a
district title, but this program is
gunning for a state title. The
district title is a significant step
along the way. While seniors
Barnes, Roach, and Young will
leave a huge hole in the prac-
tice room, it is up to the return-
ing athletes to fill these holes
and step up the intensity on the
road to a state title.
According to the coaching
staff, the best part about
wrestling is that any student
can do it and be successful.
While athleticism helps, it is not
required for a person to learn
the sport and enjoy success.
Every student is welcome.

Young artists sought for calendar

collected. Twelve designs will
be selected, one for each
month of the year. Entry dead-
line is March 19, 2010.
This eighth annual art
search is conducted in partner-
ship with local problem gam-
bling prevention and outreach
coordinators. Students are
urged to express their feelings
and perceptions about problem
gambling through their art.
These unique messages are
shared with schools and part-
ners statewide.
“Gambling is everywhere
and our kids are more exposed
than ever before. Right now we
estimate that up to 6,300 ado-
lescents have severe gam-
bling-related difficulties in Ore-
gon,” said Paul D. Potter, DHS
problem gambling services
manager. “The calendar will
help raise awareness of a prob-
lem that affects Oregon teens
and adults.”
Artwork should illustrate one
of ten different messages (see
problem gambling prevention
Web site, below) and be en-
tered on letter-size white paper
with the name of the student
artist, grade level, school and
city on the back. DHS and its
partners will judge the entries.

Bruce Schafer, executive di-

ence, but also inspires stu-
dents to pursue rewarding ca-
reers in engineering and com-
puter science. Oregon and
Oregon’s industries need their
talent.”
Obituary
HENRY VALENTINE ADE
Henry Valentine Ade, 79, for-
merly of Linnton, died February
16, 2010. A private family service
has been held.
Mr. Ade was born May 31,
1930, in Mill City. The family
moved to Vernonia when he was
five years old. He served in the
U.S. Army.
In 1954, he married Marie El-
lis. They made their home in Lin-
nton until 1997, then traveled
around the U.S. He worked as a
boiler operator.
Survivors include his wife; a
son, Rick; a daughter, Diane
Richards; five grandchildren; and
four great-grandchildren.
MARTHA THERESA “MARTY”
BUTTERWORTH
Martha Theresa “Marty” But-
terworth, 89, Banks, died Febru-
ary 20, 2010. A funeral mass was
held February 24 at St. Edward’s
Catholic Church in North Plains,
followed by interment at St. Fran-
cis Cemetery in Roy.
Mrs. Butterworth was born
December 6, 1920, in Mountain-
dale, to Henry J. and Mary Ellen
(Vandehey) VanDomelen. She
was raised in Mountaindale.
In 1941, she married EB
Charles Butterworth. They made
their home in North Plains, Scap-
poose, Rockaway and Spray, be-
fore moving to Idaho Falls, Ida-
ho, in 1955. In 1961, they moved
to North Plains then to Manning
in 1962. In 2000, they returned to
North Plains. She moved to
Banks later.
She was preceded in death by
her husband; a daughter, Dean-
na Cole; five brothers; and 11
sisters.
Survivors include her son,
James R. Butterworth of Hills-
boro; five grandchildren; four
great-grandchildren; nieces and
nephews.
Remembrances are suggest-
ed to Hospice and Palliative Care
of Washington County.

JR.
Florian Mitchell Davis, Jr., 51,
Banks, died February 21, 2010.
A memorial service will be sched-
uled at a later time.
Mr. Davis, Jr. was born June
5, 1958, in Hillsboro, to Florian E.
Sr. and Karen (Cooper) Davis.
He was raised in Forest Grove
where he graduated from high
school in 1976. He had worked in
the cabinet manufacturing indus-
try and was president of F & C
Cabinets in Forest Grove, the
family company.
He was preceded in death by
a sister, Robin Staudmier.
LOUISE MARIE SMITH
Louise Marie Smith, 78, For-
est Grove, died February 12,
2010. A funeral mass was held
February 19 at Visitation Catholic
Church in Verboort. Interment
was at Visitation Cemetery.
Mrs. Smith was born Septem-
ber 23, 1931, in Gales Creek, to
Louis A. and Gladys I. (Rogers)
Vanderzanden. She was raised
in Roy. She graduated from
Banks High School in 1949.
In 1949, she married Paul M.
Smith. They made their home in
St. Paul, Scoggins Valley and
Gaston before moving to Forest
