Page 4 The INDEPENDENT, February 18, 2010 Council tables sign ordinance for further study The February 16 Vernonia City Council meeting started with council choosing Randy Parrow to act as Council Presi- dent for 2010. It was also an- nounced that two councilor po- sitions, plus the mayor’s posi- tion, will be up for a vote in No- vember. City Administrator Bob Young told council that changes to the proposed new sign ordinance will be held until after staff has reviewed the or- dinance more and Paul Koch gives his Main Street presenta- tion. City Attorney Jeff Bennett added that the sign ordinance is part of land use and, as such, is regulated by state land use rules, whivh require that criteria must be included for ways to appeal decisions made under the ordinance. Mayor Sally Harrison added that, as part of the Main Street project, there will by Town Halls held for the public. Police Chief Frank Grace told council that, “Police work is challenging and dangerous” and, “takes lots of training.” He went on to say that the Vernon- ia officers are well trained and know how to do their jobs. Grace said he wanted, “to put wraps on the taser incident last year” and told council that the person who was tased recently pleaded no contest to attempt- ed assault on a police officer and guilty to resisting arrest. “That puts this to rest,” finished Grace. Captain Mike Kay told coun- cil that there will be a concert with three bands on July 4, be- fore the fireworks. He is calling this event, “Vernonia’s Great American Bash,” and would like to see a car show and mo- torcycle show that day also. Young said that funds re- maining from a grant for sewer, which was thought to be $200,000, has been found to be over $500,000, a happy oc- currence. In other business, council: • approved the Mayor’s ap- pointment of Jill Hult to the Ver- nonia Community Learning Center committee; • gave approval for the pur- chase of 16 fire rings (at $75.00 each) for Anderson Park. Council was told Parks SDC funds would be used for this purpose. The next council meeting is scheduled for March 1, starting at 7:00 p.m. at City Hall.
