Town Hall: Students ask questions of Senator Wyden CCCCF honors County employee
From page 1
“Good question. Instead of
worrying about it being another
Vietnam, I’m afraid it’s going to
be another Afghanistan,” which
brought a laugh before Wyden
went on, “If we’ve learned any-
thing since the December 25
attack, it’s that Al Qaida is not
going to be a one country solu-
tion.”
Another student question
was, “What’s the current
stance for funding new
schools?” Wyden said the pas-
sage of the $13 million bond,
“makes it easier for me to show
the community’s commitment
to those at the federal level.”
The Town Hall was held as
part of Wyden’s commitment to
hold town halls in each county
each year.
Right: Student Calie John-
ston asking Senator Wyden
about Afghanistan.

Columbia County employee
Jan Greenhalgh was honored
January 5 by the Columbia
County Commission on Chil-
dren and Families, with a cer-
tificate of appreciation and
flowers for her work to support
Columbia County’s children
and their families. Making the
presentation were Healthy
Start Program Supervisor Sun-
day Kamppi, Commission on
Children and Families Director
Jan Spika Kenna, and Healthy
Start Advisory Committee
Chair Jim Wilson.
The certificate thanked
Greenhalgh for being “A part-
ner committed to the health
and well being of Columbia
County children and their fami-
lies”. Greenhalgh challenged
volunteers to make over 120
items for the Commission’s
Holiday Book Bags. She also
mobilized donations of cash
and things for children in the
Healthy Start program.
Over $2,000 in cash was do-
nated to Healthy Start because
of Greenhalgh’s effort and
about 100 volunteer hours
were clocked for the Holiday
Book Bags. And, at her sug-
gestion, the recipient of the
2009 County’s Giving Tree was
the Healthy Start program. Al-
most $1,000 in donated items
were given by County employ-
ees.
Columbia County employ-
ees and the Board of County
Commissioners were warmly
thanked by the presenters for
supporting the local Commis-
sion and Healthy Start. Healthy
Start is a Commission on Chil-
dren and Families’ program
contracted with Community Ac-
tion Team (CAT).
Through the Commission,
CAT was recently awarded
funds to expand Healthy Start
family services to Clatsop
County children. At the presen-
tation, they were thanked for
making this child abuse preven-
