Columbia County Sheriff
Dear Nehalem Valley
Residents: When I took
office last year, it was
my intent to immediately
begin a dedicated patrol
in the Nehalem Valley
for 40 hours per week.
However, we lost two
positions that could not
be filled due to the Tim-
ber Fund Cuts in the
Col. Co. Sheriff
2008-09 budget year. Even after the cuts were
partially reinstated, we had no additional staff to
assign those duties.
This year, the additional revenue losses that
meant the reduction of additional positions have
put us in the precarious position of usually hav-
ing only one deputy on per shift (if that) any-
where in the 650+ square miles of Columbia
County.
I have been working with a committee ap-
pointed by the Board of County Commissioners
to address the gap in sheriff’s services brought
about by
