Each particular service to the sheriff, whether VIPS, SAR or
reserves will have its own bank account where donations desig-
nated for a particular service will be deposited. The Board will
help raise funds for the various services, ensure that funds are
deposited in the appropriate accounts, work with the sheriff to
identify appropriate expenditures and draw funds on the accounts
in support of sheriff volunteer services.
If you have a desire to support sheriff’s office volunteer servic-
es, you can call the sheriff’s office at 503-366-4611. We have nu-
merous opportunities for community-minded individuals to help
make a difference in the livability of our county. We gratefully ac-
cept the donation of your time, and our volunteers will welcome
any donation of time or resources to help them carry out there
mission.
It is all for the higher goal of providing the best public safety
services possible to all county residents from Vernonia to Scap-
poose and St. Helens to Clatskanie, and all points in between!

YOUNG
Robert Michael “Bob” Burnett,
78, Vernonia, died September 30,
2009. A prayer service was held
October 5 followed by vault inter-
ment at Gethsemane Catholic
Cemetery in Happy Valley.
Mr. Burnett was born December
16, 1930, on the Ojibwe Reserva-
ton in White Earth, Minnesota, to
Mr. Burnett and Frances Winter-
meyer. He was raised in Cass
Lark, Minn.
In 1953, he married Joyce Ann
Sabin. They made their home in
Minn. until moving to Milwaukie in
1955 and later to Oak Grove. She
died in 1978. In 1980, he married
Cynthia S. “Cindy” Trute. They
lived in Oak Grove until moving to
Vernonia in 1984. He worked as a
yard master for Portland Terminal
Railroad for 41 years, retiring in
1992.
Survivors include his wife; two
sons, Timothy Robert of Portland
and Jack Michael of Lafayette; two
daughters, Jody Marie Meskel and
Gena Marie Hayes, both of Port-
land; and six grandchildren.

John Frank Polvorosa, 73, Ver-
nonia, died September 11, 2009. A
celebration of life will be held Octo-
ber 26, at 11:00 a.m. at St.
Joseph’s Catholic Church in Fre-
mont, California.
Mr. Polvorosa was born June
19, 1936, in San Leandro, Calif., to
Frank and Josephine (Perry)
Polvorosa. He was raised in San
Leandro and worked in the family
grocery store after high school.
In 1958, he married Dixie Lee
Ames. He served in the U.S. Army.
After his discharge, they made
their home in Fremont, Calif., until
1997. He owned the Mission
Ranch Liquors. They moved to
Vernonia in 1997.
He was preceded in death by
his wife.
Survivors include two sons,
Bradley of Piedmont, Calif., and
Bret of Portland; one daughter,
Kristin Lee Krueger of Danville,
Veretta M. Schmidlin, 88, North
Plains, died October 8, 2009. A fu-
neral mass will be held Friday, Oc-
tober 16, at 11:00 a.m. at St. Ed-
ward Catholic Church in North
Plains. A burial ceremony was held
October 9 at Buxton Cemetery.
Mrs. Schmidlin was born May
14, 1921, in Fort Jones, California,
to William and Elsie Shepard.
In 1941, she married Ambrose
Joseph Schmidlin. They moved to
Buxton in 1947. She moved to
North Plains in 1992. She worked
as an auditor for Textronix for 25

MARLIN
Rocky Lesley Marlin Young, 66,
Hillsboro, died October 3, 2009. A
celebration of life service was held
October 11 at Brookwood Baptist
Church in Hillsboro, with Pastor
John Cahill officiating. Interment
was at North Cemetery of Clear
Creek in Vernonia.
Mr. Young was born May 2,
1943, in Litchfield, Illinois, to Leslie
and Ailene (Brockmeyer) Young.
He was raised in Michigan and at-
tended Baxter Seminary in Baxter,
Tennessee.
In 1971, he married Deborah L.
Harr. They made their home in
Beaverton before moving to Tim-
ber in 1978. They moved to Hills-
boro in 1994. He worked as a car-
penter in the commercial construc-
tion industry until becoming dis-
abled by an injury.
Survivors include his wife; sev-
en children, Tiffany R. Youngblood,
Katie-Lynne E. Young, both of
Hillsboro, Colt M. Young of Timber;
Daphane R. Young and Robin S.
Young, both of Chicago, Ill.,
Natasha A. Young of Paris, and
Fawn C. Cherry of Beaverton; a
brother, Morgan of Cookville,
Tenn.; a sister, Carolyn Whitaker of
Cookville, Tenn.; six grandchildren;
nieces and nephews.
Remembrances are suggested
to the Hillsboro Public Schools Ath-
letic Fund or to the Battered
Women’s Shelter.
