So, how do we do the best we can with these limited re-
sources? We have an ambitious plan to do just that, and we con-
tinue to see encouraging signs that our plan is taking shape.
First, we have been aggressively courting skilled individuals to
join our reserve deputy ranks. We currently have five reserve
deputies who assist and augment our efforts with our regular
sworn staff. We also have a number of outstanding reserve appli-
cants who are seeking to help us carry this burden.
Second, we have begun a volunteer program called, “Volun-
teers In Partnership with the Sheriff” (VIPS). More than 20 VIPS
volunteers assist us with clerical help in the office and with oper-
ational services (e.g. traffic and crowd control at events and as-
sistance with maintenance and vehicle services) out in the field.
