The INDEPENDENT, September 3, 2009 Page 21 Ike Says… From page 3 would be an easy 200 yard shot. Then I noticed the Does were sensing that something was up, but didn’t know what, and they started a fast walk, right toward me. I quickly set- tled the old .270 in the crotch of the shooting sticks and readied myself for the shot. Soon I had three of the Does filling my scope and then the black horns of the lead buck. Then the questions started entering my mind, is this the big buck? Is this buck large enough to end my hunt? My mind said, yes! At 150 yards, walking straight at me, the buck met his end. For me it is sometimes a sober moment when the end of a hunt is reached and I have taken a life. The buck that lay before me was a magnificent animal; I had made a good stalk and a clean kill. But I also knew that it might be 13 years, again, before I would get to ex- perience this great high desert country and the inspiring ante- lope bucks that run across its horizons. I also realized it may very well be my last antelope hunting trip with my father. Speaking of Dad, he was soon on the radio, then drove down into the bottom, packed up the pack boards and took some pictures of my prize and me. Even at 82, he packed the head and some of my gear down the hill to the waiting pick- up. Boy, I sure hope I’m still do- ing that when I reach those years in my life.
