Updegrave photos – works of art From page 9 since then was when he could- n’t afford film. Then came digi- tal cameras and he was right back to clicking away. After living in Virginia, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Ari- zona and Florida, he landed in Vernonia about four years ago to work for a small company as a mechanical designer, and stayed. He believes he has more photos of Columbia County than anyone, many of them taken in out-of-the-way places. Pictures of some of Upde- grave’s favorite subjects will soon end up in a coffee table book in his “Carmageddon” col- lection of old vehicles rotting away in fields and on farms in the area. That series started at an old wrecking yard he came across in Rainier. “I really like keeping my photography in Co- lumbia County,” said Upde- grave. Updegrave is always looking for people with collections he can photograph, in addition to the old and rusty vehicles and equipment he likes to find. He’s currently looking for chain- saws, Johnson boat motors and other interesting items to add to his photographic collec- tion. In addition to his pictures, he has a collection of about 600 flashlights, all from South- east Pennsylvania. You can find Updegrave’s photos online at www.flickr. com/photos/cupdegrave . You can also see a few of his pho- tos in the window of The Inde- pendent, at 725 Bridge St., Ver- nonia.
