Council told Jamboree pretty much problem free Two school construction options
The Vernonia City Council
meeting of August 17 started
with the swearing in of the new
Vernonia Chief of Police, Frank
Grace (see related story, page
1).
City Attorney Jeff Bennett
gave council a presentation on
their options for dealing with
topics raised by citizens at
council meetings. Council was
reminded that personnel issues
brought up by citizens would be
most appropriately redirected
to City Administrator Bob
Young for handling.
Shirlee Daughtry spoke to
council of her concerns about
ongoing vandalism and littering
at Hawkins Park and finished
with the statement, “Somehow
we have to get a handle on it.”
Council discussed some op-
tions but no decisions were
reached.
Jamboree was deemed a
success from the police depart-
ment’s perspective, with only
two adults arrested and only
three police reports generated.
This year, the police depart-
ment force was supplemented
by volunteers from the Colum-
bia County Sheriff, Columbia
City Police, Hillsboro Police,
Multnomah County Sheriff,
Oregon State Police, and St.
Helens Police. These outside
agencies donated a total of 108
hours to Jamboree enforce-
ment.
Council accepted Kate
Laird’s resignation from the
Vernonia Community Learning
Center (VCLC) Committee.
Council then asked city staff to
schedule a workshop for them
with the Committee to discuss
operations of the learning cen-
ter. City Administrator Young
told council that DeAnna Pearl
(Director of Vernonia Preven-
tion Coalition) and the Upper
Nehalem Watershed Council
now have offices in the VCLC
and that space has been rent-
ed for ballet/dance classes
there.
In other business, council;
• gave their consensus for
the appointment of Sam Potter
to the Public Works Committee,
• unanimously approved a
disbursement of $3,500 to Co-
lumbia County Rider. This is
the amount that the city has
given to the Rider in the past
few years. This year, Rider had
asked for $5,000 to help with
operations and expanded serv-
ices.
The next meeting of the city
council is scheduled for Tues-
day, September 8, at 7:00 p.m.
in City Hall. The meeting day is
changed to Tuesday due to the
Labor Day holiday on Monday,
September 7.

In other business,
• new staff and student
handbooks were presented,
• 2009-10 student fees were
approved. New fees were put
in place for middle school
sports ($20.00 per sport, per
child), a $20.00 Outdoor meal
fee was added and breakfast
food service fee went from
$1.25 to $1.30.
Upcoming events include
dessert at the new school site
(Spencer Park) at 1:00 p.m. on
September 1, the first day of
school on September 8, and
the next board meeting at 6:00
p.m. on September 10 at the
district office.
School buses will soon be on the roads
Because not all school dis-
tricts will wait until after Labor
Day to get started, it is time to
be ready for slightly slower traf-
fic on regular school days.
Remember to come to a
complete stop when a school
bus is stopped in your lane, or
on two lane highways, also
when it is coming toward you.
