Page 20 The INDEPENDENT, August 20, 2009 Vernonian Doug Davenport wins his heat at River City Speedway by Mike Weber St. Helens drivers Jeremy Martin and Justin McMullen set Columbia County Racing Asso- ciation track record qualifying times and both recorded top three main event finishes in the Lemmons Trucking Race Sat- urday, August 15, at River City Speedway. Deer Island’s Scott Mc- Mullen won the Mini Stock main and Bud Russell of St. Helens, notched a career best second to Portland’s Rick Graham in the Sportsman main. The Nu- som Racing team of Gresham, swept the top four positions in the Street Stock main. Milwaukie’s Eric Lindquist led the first 15 laps of the Sportsman main with his Re- liant Elevator Chevrolet. Lindquist was slowed by a lapped car, which provided Graham with an opening to move past on the inside lane and take the lead on lap 16. Graham led the remainder of the 40-lap race with his T&T Draggin’ Wagons Towing/Per- fection Automotive 1978 Ponti- ac Firebird. Graham, who notched his second win, had half a lap lead over Russell, the runnerup in his Competitive Edge Sign & Design/Knife Riv- er Chevrolet Monte Carlo. Port- land Frank Elwess took third, Stephen Kaptur of St. Helens was fourth and Portland’s LeRoy White took fifth. “I just got slowed a little by lapped cars and there was no way that I could catch Gra- ham,” said Russell, a first year stock car racing driver, whose pit crew chief is his dad, Mike Russell. “The maintenance crew of Sam Brittain, Ed Brasmer and Charlie Rigdon did a good job working on the track and it was in just perfect condition.” Mark Beehler of Deer Island, led the first 12 laps of the Mini Stock main. Scott McMullen passed Beehler on lap 13 after the two circled the track for five laps while their cars were side- by-side. McMullen led the dura- tion of the 30-lap race with his McMullen Water Systems 1985 Ford Mustang. McMullen won by a straight- away length over Beehler. Justin McMullen (Scott’s son) set the Mini Stock track record of 15.73 seconds in qualifying. Justin, 19, took third in his Skin- ny’s Texaco Mustang for an eighth straight top five finish and he leads the series points. “The car was dialed-in and it was really running good,” said Scott McMullen, who also won the trophy dash. “It took a while to get ahead of Brad Beehler. Once I did get in front, then I was able to move out into a sizeable advantage, especially since it was a caution free race.” Joel Beehler of St. Helens was fourth and he won the heat race with his Subaru Impreza. Joel, 16, a St. Helens High School junior, competed in the Tracers last year and he’s sec- ond in the point standings Eddie Farness led the first W illiams M etal F ab four laps of the Street Stock main until Gresham’s John Nu- som passed him on the fifth cir- cuit. Nusom led until lap 19 when his older brother Curt moved in front and held on for the win. Vancouver’s Robert Jenner passed Vernonia’s Doug Dav- enport on lap 12 of the 30-lap Modified main and held on for his second win with the Dis- count Race Car Parts open wheel racer. Jenner and Dav- enport also won heat races. Jenner is second in the division point standings behind his un- cle, Don Jenner of Vancouver. Martin took second in his Reser’s Fine Foods racer, fol- lowed by Davenport. Martin set the one-lap track qualifying record of 13.65 seconds on the quarter mile clay oval. Vancouver’s Stacey Fordyce won the 20-lap women’s main while driving the Recovery Racing 1975 Nova. Collen Winebarger of Corbett, won the Tracer Division (age 13-16 year olds) race. Winebarger, 13, who competes at Sunset Speedway in Banks and St. Helens, has a combined total of six Tracer wins out of seven starts with the Absolute Auto Service Camaro. Trey Starks of Puyallup, WA, won the 25 lap Micro Sprint car main. Keith Everson, 63, of Marysville, WA, won the Pacific Mini Sprint main with his Kleco Racing open wheel racer.
