This column was provided by Superintendent Dr. Ken Cox. It seems like just yesterday I was writ- ing about the end of school and now we are looking at a new school year. I hope all of you students out there are enjoying the summer and getting ready for a new year as we are only a few weeks away from the first day of school – September 8th. For you parents and other district patrons who are reading this, please note that last week the Vernonia School Board passed a resolution setting the bond at $13 million for the November 3rd election (which would translate to approximately $1.90 per one thousand dollars of assessed property tax value). You should also know that the board was very careful in wording the ballot lan- guage for the bond to address some concerns they heard in the community. Because of the way the ballot language is written, the bond funds can be used only to: • “Construct, furnish and equip elementary, middle and high school facilities on an insurable site above the flood plain. • Purchase property and pay any related demolition and site improvement costs. • Pay fees associated with issuing the bonds.” Copies of the entire resolution and what will appear on the bal- lot in November are available at the District office. Please feel free to stop by and get a copy, call and ask questions, or visit with a board member. The $13 million bond represents about one third of the funding we will need to build a K-12 facility, which the architects now es- timate at approximately $37 million. We are currently working to secure the maximum amount of federal, state, private and grant funding available to pay the balance of the cost. We will place some of the latest drawings of the new schools on our website along with other details about the bond measure and its costs. Donate to CHS’s fundraiser sale Columbia Humane Society is now accepting donations for their yearly garage sale. Dona- tions can be dropped off at Co- lumbia Self Storage on any Tuesday, Thursday or Sunday from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. through September 20. Remember, all donations are tax deductible so don’t for- get to ask for a receipt.
