Two husband/wife duos notch top 10s at speedway
by Mike Weber
Area drivers Joel Beehler,
Justin McMullen, Adam Beeh-
ler, Linda Holland and Jeremy
Martin had top three main
event finishes in the Wilcox &
Flegel Race Saturday, July 11,
at River City Speedway to so-
lidify their positions as division
title contenders.
St. Helens drivers Tricia
“Great” Brittain and Bud Rus-
sell recorded top-10 sportsman
finishes. Two husband/wife
teams also had impressive ef-
forts. Mike and Jenelle Harri-
son of St. Helens, notched top-
10s, with Mike getting ninth in
the street stock main and
Jenelle eighth in the mini stock
race. Scott McMullen and his
wife, Kathy, from Deer Island,
each posted top-five finishes.
Vancouver’s Rick Rehanek
started on the pole position of
the 16-car sportsman main and
led from the opening circuit of
the quarter-mile clay oval until
lap 38. Longview’s Brian
Vaugn, who was the fastest
qualifier at 15.87 seconds,
overtook Rehanek and led the
last three laps to get the win
with his Perfection Automo-
tive/Liner Racing Chevrolet
Monte Carlo.
Rehanek was second, fol-
lowed by Portland’s Rick Gra-
ham, Eric Lindquist of Mil-
waukie and Gresham’s John
Nusom. Russell took sixth in
his Competitive Edge Sign &
Design Chevrolet. Brittain, who
won the trophy dash, took
eighth with her Fast Racing/
Rose Valley Market Chevy.
“I’ve had a few problems
while trying to figure out this
car, but I’m just hoping for a
good finish in the point stand-
ings,” said Russell, a first-year
driver whose parents, Mike and
Terri Russell competed at the
track 17 years ago.
Mike Harrison led the first
eight laps of the mini stock
main with his Double J Tires
Chevy Malibu. Adam Beehler of
St. Helens, maneuvered past
Harrison on lap nine and led
the next eight laps with his
Triple X Archery Honda Civic.
Joel
Beehler,
Adam’s
nephew, zoomed up front with
his Johnny’s Bar & Grill Dodge
Neon to take over the lead on
lap 18. Joel 16, of St. Helens,
led the remainder of the 30-lap
event and won by four car
lengths over Adam.
It was Joel’s second main
event win, his fourth top-five
finish and he’s second in the
standings behind defending
champion Justin McMullen of
Deer Island. Justin took third to
get a fifth straight top-five finish
with his McMullen Water Sys-
tems/Skinny’s Texaco 1985
Ford Mustang. Harrison took
fourth and Scott McMullen was
fifth.
“I’ve been running pretty
consistent all year and the
Beehlers are doing good too,”
said McMullen, who leads Joel
Beehler by 10 points. “It’s go-
ing to be a good battle all year
in the point standings, which
just makes it much more fun.
Joel has learned how to drive
fast, so I’m sure that we’re go-
ing to have some good compe-
tition all year.”
Clint Petty of Scappoose,
led the first 12 laps of the mod-
ified main. Vancouver’s Robert
Jenner passed Petty on the
outside lane of the front
straightaway on lap 13 and led
the remainder of the 30-lap
event with his Discount Race
Car Parts racer. Robert’s uncle,
Don Jenner was second and he
leads the standings. Martin, of
St. Helens, took third with his
Reser’s Fine Foods open-
wheel style racer. Robert Jen-
ner, the 2008 Rookie-of-the-
Year, is ranked third in the se-
ries behind Martin’s second
place.
In the women’s class, Jesse
Farness won the main, with
Kim Lemmons taking second,
Holland was third and Mc-
Mullen took fourth. Holland of
Deer Island, leads the division
standings. Lemmons of Toledo,
WA, won the trophy dash and
heat race with her Chevy.
In other events, Gresham’s
Brad Nusom led from start-to-
finish with his T&T Draggin’
Wagons Towing Camaro. Nu-
som also won the trophy dash
and heat. Brad’s dad Curt, was
second in the Tom’s Auto and
Performance Chevy. Gaston’s
Corey Esteban won the PHRA
Dwarf Car B main. Henry
Corbin III of Molalla won the
PHRA A main. Jesse Shannon
of Centralia won the Pacific
Mini Sprint main. The next
event is the non-points Colum-
bia County Fair Race July 15.
