Page 12 The INDEPENDENT, April 16, 2009 Wolves in Oregon topic of Zoo lecture Get ready for district election votes On a hot summer night in a remote area of northeastern Oregon, Russ Morgan and a colleague pulled their truck to the side of an abandoned road, turned their heads toward the sky and began howling. Mo- ments later their call was re- turned. The distinct sounds of two adult wolves and two wolf pups quickly filled the night sky. Oregon’s first resident wolf pack in more than 60 years had Ballots will be mailed May 1 for the May 19 election of board members for school districts, fire districts, and other special districts. Banks voters will choose directors for the boards of the Banks School District and the Banks Fire District. Positions 1, 2 and 4 are open on the Banks School Board. All positions are four- year terms. Position 1 has attracted two candidates. Glenn Hinman is a part-time teacher/administrator who lists no prior governmental experience on his filing. His op- ponent is Norie Dimeo-Ediger whose occupation is K-12 Pro- gram Manager for Oregon For- est Resources Institute. She has served on the Banks Plan- ning Commission and the Banks Community Library Board of Directors. Incumbent Will Moore is un- opposed for Position 2. Richard Bowden, who lists prior governmental experience on the Banks Planning Com- mission, is unopposed for Posi- tion 4. He works for Clean Wa- ter Services. Two director positions are open on the Banks Fire District board. Both are for four-year terms and incumbents Matt Pihl and Steven Harr, are run- ning unopposed. Morgan, the Oregon Depart- ment of Fish and Wildlife’s wolf coordinator, will discuss the tri- umphant return of wolves to their historic range, and strate- gies for preserving the species in Oregon, on Tuesday, April 28, at 7:00 p.m. at the Oregon Zoo, as part of the 2009 Wildlife Conservation Lecture Series. In his lecture, “Wolf Conser- 5/7/09 vation and Management in Oregon: Modern History, Chal- lenges and the Future,” Morgan will give a history of wolves in the West and discuss the im- plementation of Oregon’s new wolf conservation and manage- ment plan. He also will give an update on recent wolf activities in the state and discuss his cur- rent research. “Not only is it exciting to have wolves return to Oregon after so many years, but essen- tial,” said Tony Vecchio, zoo di- rector. “Wolves, and other large predators, play pivotal roles in our delicate ecosystems.
