The INDEPENDENT, March 19, 2009 Page 7 Community Senior News The Library Book Sale at Vernonia Library was deemed a great success, bringing in over $600.00. These two young readers found many interesting items at the sale, held on March 7. Bring ideas for parks on April 7 Learn God’s way Do you have ideas that ing, handicapped accessible to beat debt would improve Vernonia’s parks? Like most of Vernonia’s resi- dents, the city has a tight budg- et and must reduce it further in the coming budget year (July 2009 - June 2010). The public works department is down to four employees, from six a few years ago, so much of the rou- tine parks maintenance is near the bottom of its priority work list. Vernonia has seven public parks: Hawkins Park, with a gazebo, ball field and swim- ming pool; Anderson Park, with full-hookup RV or tent camping, covered picnic area, shower rooms and a horse arena; Shay Park, with the old logging train engine; Ora Bolmeier Park, a neighborhood park on Louisi- ana, Spencer Field’s ball fields; Vernonia Lake Park, with fish- piers and tent camping; and Airport Park, with self-con- tained RV or tent camping along the Nehalem River on Airport Road. All of the parks have picnic tables, most have restrooms and some have playground equipment. There is a lot to consider, so local residents are invited to bring their ideas to an informal discussion with members of the Vernonia Parks Committee on Tuesday, April 7 at 7:00 p.m., at the Vernonia Community Learning Center. At that time, there may be information on possible new playground equipment and, if so, volun- teers will be sought to help with installation. Bring your ideas and join in coffee, refreshments and con- versation about our parks. My Fair Lady nominations open The annual My Fair Lady Pageant is now accepting nom- inations for this year’s My Fair Lady Court. The My Fair Lady Pageant is held during the Columbia County Fair to recognize senior women for their outstanding service in the community. Last year’s My Fair Lady princess from Vernonia was Carol Sawyer. To nominate someone to the court, contact Nancy Harwood at the Retired & Senior Volun- teer Program (RSVP) at 503- 397-5655 or rsvp@opusnet. com for an application. Nominees must be at least 55 years-old, but do not need to be a member of RSVP or their local senior center. Nomi- nations are due March 31.
