The INDEPENDENT, February 5, 2009 Sign up now for Murphy’s parade Murphy’s Furniture is now accepting entry forms to the Murphy St. Patrick’s parade on Saturday, March 14. Murphy’s produces the parade every year as a thank you to the Washington County Communi- ty. Murphy’s believe it’s impor- tant to provide the parade as a symbol of the hope brought with spring. Mary and Kathy, daughters of Murphy Furniture founder Ruth Murphy, consider this community event a privi- lege to present. Every year’s St Patrick’s Pa- rade seems to have its own personality. Past years’ entries include Washington County Sheriff’s armored truck, a vari- ety of floats from schools and local businesses, car clubs and a motorcycle drill team. Royalty have graced the parade from Miss Teen Rodeo, Clark Coun- ty, Columbia County, Tillamook County, Yamhill County Rodeo Courts as well as Woodland’s Planter Days Court. Washing- ton County Sheriff’s Mounted Posse always act as Color Guard. Even “Everybody’s Friend” Ronald McDonald has joined the celebration! The parade’s 30-year histo- ry began as a partnership with local radio station KUIK. The original parade route was on TV Hwy. starting at the parking lot of Bimart on the east end of Hillsboro, and ending in the parking lot of what is now Win- co on the west end of Hillsboro. That is twice as long as the cur- rent parade route. The celebration will kick off with staging beginning at 9:00 a.m. in the parking lot across from Hare Field, on NE Grant Street in Hillsboro. The parade starts at 11 a.m. at Hare Field. The parade route continues east to Cornell Road, South on Main Street, West on Main to 2nd Ave, North on 2nd to Grant Street, and East back to Hare Field. The party will continue with the Corned Beef and Cabbage Feed sponsored by Sports Look. Its staff volunteers their Please see page 18 Chalk Talk Chalk Talk is a monthly column of information about Vernonia schools. It is written by various staff mem- bers. This column was provided by Glenda DeLemos, Technology Coordinator. Keeping parents informed is a top priority at Vernonia Schools. Here are two examples: AlertNow – We have recently adopted the AlertNow Notification Service which will allow us to send a telephone message to you providing important information about closures, events or emergencies. If you have a child in school you have probably already received a call. Here is some additional information about the system. What you need to know about receiving calls sent through AlertNow: • Your caller ID will display the school district’s main number (503-429-5891) when a general announcement is delivered. • Your caller ID will display 411 if the message is a dire emergency. • AlertNow will leave a message on any an- swering machine or voicemail. • Unfortunately, any background noise will stop the message from playing (such as radio, TV or talking). So if the AlertNow message stops playing, press any numeric key 1-9 and the message will replay from the beginning. The successful delivery of information is de- pendent upon accurate contact information for each student, so please make certain that the school has your most current phone numbers. If your information changes during the year, please let the school know immediately. MealTime Online – We are also pleased to announce our new online account payment sys- tem for school lunches, MealTime Online. This program will enable parents to use their comput- er to: • make credit card deposits, • view online deposit history, and • view student’s cafeteria account balance and meal purchase transaction history. MealTime Online will be available in February through a link on the district website (www.ver- nonia.k12.or.us). Watch the website and your mailbox for more information and instructions.
