Page 4 The INDEPENDENT, December 18, 2008 Council reads ordinance on Dangerous Buildings At the December 15 Vernon- ia City Council meeting, the council heard a progress report from Alan Deweber of D.A.D.’s Recycling. D.A.D.’s was unable to obtain a FEMA grant for a new building, but that won’t af- fect their re-siting effort. The move is still held up while wait- ing for a permit to build an ap- proach road to their new site. Funding for the road still needs to be found, Deweber told council. Council agreed to ex- tend D.A.D.’s deadline to move to the end of March, as long as DEQ doesn’t have any objec- tions. Council asked Deweber to continue giving them month- ly progress updates. Council approved the use of CDBG funds for flood property buy-outs. They have previously approved the use of these grant funds for house lifts. This allows Columbia County Flood Relief to start making funding decisions on flood projects. Council heard the first read- ing of a new Ordinance Related to Dangerous Buildings. Coun- cil asked for clarification on how this ordinance would han- dle inspections of properties without owner cooperation. In- terim City Administrator Jim Johnson, who attended the meeting by teleconference, will request more information on the subject from the city attor- ney prior to the second reading of the ordinance. Once the ordi- nance goes into affect, it will al- low the City to designate a building, structure or ap- pendage unsafe. Once so des- ignated, a nuisance abatement can be issued requiring the un- safe condition to be repaired, rehabilitated, demolished or re- moved. In other business, council: • heard a letter written by Josette Mitchell on behalf of the 2008 Salmon Festival Commit- tee, that thanked Cynda Allen of the Flood Distribution Center for providing toys for an all day toy raffle at the festival • accepted the certified elec- tion results from Columbia County, • heard Harrison tell Coun- cilor Steve Whiteman that it has been a pleasure serving with him on the council and he will be sorely missed. This was Whiteman’s last meeting, as he did not run for re-election. Kevin Hudson will replace him. The next council meeting is scheduled for January 5, at City Hall, starting at 7:00 p.m. Sandy Welch, left, happily accepta a donation of $1000 from Bridge Street Mini Mart, presented by manager Toni Barton.
