The INDEPENDENT, December 4, 2008 Community All turkeys: report for dinner duty Turkeys are still needed at Vernonia Cares food bank to include with the Christmas food boxes that will be disbursed December 19. Donations of turkeys in Vernonia are down by about 50 percent from last year as our local economy struggles along with the rest of the country. Vernonia Sentry has been very helpful to Vernonia Cares and makes the donation process so simple. Turkeys can be purchased and donated right at the check stand. Also, the checkers are accepting do- nations of $10.00 for a turkey or $30.00 to sponsor an entire family meal. There is still time to register for a Christmas food box that includes a turkey for a family meal until December 11. The “Christmas Boxes” are not ex- clusively for regular Vernonia Cares clients. If you or some- one you know needs a little helping hand for a holiday meal this year, contact Sandy Welch at Vernonia Cares for more in- formation, 503-429-1414. If you need your donated turkey picked up at your home, call Pat or Bob Stacklie at 503- 429-7563. Buy these bulbs from Girl Scouts Vernonia Girl Scouts will be selling potted tulips and hy- acinths in the month of Decem- ber as a fundraiser for our an- nual winter camp retreat to Camp Mountaindale. These potted tulips not only benefit our local girls but a regional grower as well, VanderZanden Farms, LLC. People may know VanderZanden Farms from their farm stand where you can buy fresh cut flowers through the spring season. Girl Scouts will be selling these decoratively wrapped, high quality pots for a very rea- sonable price of $6.00 each. The delivery date will be near or on Valentine’s Day, 2009. You will be able to place your orders at the upcoming bazaar and through any local Girl Scout. Questions? Call Susan Ely at 503-429-5709. Sturdevant in Legion for 63 years Vernonian Ralph Sturdevant recently celebrated 63 years as a member of the American Legion. The picture at left was taken at the time he received a certificate in honor of his 60th year of member- ship, in 2005. Dog license renewal glitch found The Columbia County Clerk’s Office recently found a glitch in the dog license re- newals sent out, and is asking everyone to check the breed of dog and age.
