Page 4 The INDEPENDENT, December 4, 2008 Vernonia Airport subject of public hearing before commissioners From page 1 about 40 such light planes and though only two airplane engi- neers would be required, the rest of the workers would be from this area and be trained to work there. About the public hearing process, Golmb said, “I’m enchanted with your demo- cratic process where everyone gets to give their opinion.” The plans presented seem to indicate that about 40 jobs, at most, might be added to the local economy. Many spoke in fa- vor of the zone change because of the need for economic devel- opment and jobs in Vernonia. Nine people spoke in favor of the proposal before the board took a short recess. Then those opposed to the change spoke (nine by the time this reporter left at around 11:00 p.m.). Opponents’ com- ments ranged from the belief that Bero’s proposal does not qualify for an exception under current land use rules, to say- ing his plans aren’t firm enough, to statements that Bero had, in years past, asked that the existing airport zone be changed to allow industrial use and then backed out of his plan to build a business there. Those opposing the change repeatedly told the board that they are not anti-growth or anti- jobs; they also listened respect- fully to proponents’ testimony. Not so respectful were some of those proponents, who repeat- edly made faces, made noises, and laughed while opponents were speaking. One opponent, Heather Hines, finally said, “No one has given any respect to these homeowners or acted re- spectfully of the people affect- ed.” She went on to ask the crowd how they would feel if someone proposed setting an industrial business down across a 10 foot street from their front doors. Other objections raised con- cerned the increase in overlay footprint of the airport, wet- lands, wildlife, quality of life for existing property owners, the vagueness and shifting con- cepts provided by Bero, and the existence of industrial lands already zoned but not in use. Some testimony concerned infrastructure and other speci- fics that would not be ad- dressed until site plans were presented to the county plan- ning commission for review, if the zone change is approved. The Board of Commission- ers agreed to continue accept- ing new written testimony for a period, before putting this re- quest on a future meeting agenda for a decision. Vernonia Mayor Sally Harrison, one of the zone change pro- ponents, was snickering while opponent Patty Brockman was presenting testimony.
