& 3rd here in Vernonia. Please
be aware that our little town will
experience a huge in-flux of
people, vehicles, and potential
safety concerns. Be aware and
cautious when driving around
town as there will be numerous
pedestrians and very slow traf-
fic. Many visitors will be unfa-
miliar with our town and will be
driving even that much slower.
Be patient, courteous, and wel-
come the many guests who will
be coming to enjoy our commu-
nity and hopefully spend mon-
ey with our businesses. Some
may even want to move here,
which will help replace all of the
residents we lost after the
flood.
The last topic I would like to
discuss is that of Golf Carts on
public streets. Recently I was
tasked by the City Council to
look into the legalities of allow-
ing Golf Carts to be used as
transportation on public road-
ways. The issue was prompted
by concerns received by the
council. I proceeded to re-
search the issue through Ore-
gon Revised Statutes, other
police departments, and other
Cities who currently allow or
regulate the use of Golf Carts in
their respective cities.
Basically to summarize what
I found out; the use of Golf
Carts is prohibited on public
roadways except for a few ex-
emptions. Oregon Revised
Statutes allow for the use of a
golf cart if the driver has ob-
tained a Disability Golf Cart
Permit (807.210) from DMV, in
lieu of their driver’s license, and
they drive on streets no higher
than 25 mph. ORS also allows
for use of Golf Carts in housing
developments adjacent to golf
courses where individuals are
eligible for membership (810.
070). All of the chiefs who
replied to my request advised
they DO NOT allow the use of
Golf Carts with the exception of
a couple of cities that had golf
