Obituary
MARTIN JAMES “MARTY” ARTHUR
Martin James Arthur, 41, Banks,
died February 3, 2008. A celebration of
life was held February 16 at Schlegel
Hall in Banks. Private interment has
been held.
Mr. Arthur was born March 27,
1966, in Portland, to William H. and
Gloria G. (Bristol) Arthur. He was raised
in Portland until the family moved to
Banks, where he completed high
school. He worked as a contractor in
commercial and residential construc-
tion.
He was preceded in death by his
mother. His fiancée, Misty L. White and
his unborn son, Wyatt William, also
died as a result of the automobile acci-
dent that caused Mr. Arthur’s death.
Survivors include two sons, James
F. and Levi A., both of Beaverton; his
daughter, Lauralynn Arthur of Beaver-
ton; his father of Banks; three brothers,
Timothy H. of Banks, Dustin J. of
Willamina, and Tyrell C. of Minot, North
Dakota; aunts, nieces and nephews.
Remembrances are suggested to
the Martin J. Arthur Trust Fund, c/o any
branch of Washington Mutual Savings,
for his children.

He was preceded in death by two
sisters, Marcella Benes and Leah
Foran.
Survivors include his wife; three
sons, Larry of Seattle, Washington, and
twins, David and Daniel, both of Ver-
nonia; two daughters, Laura Brixey of
Beaverton, and Lonnie Gerbracht of La
Center, Wash.; three sisters, Alma
Hartford of Beaverton, Marla Reeb, and
Dianne Benes; 14 grandchildren; and
seven great-grandchildren.
Remembrances are suggested to
the Mist/Birkenfeld Rural Fire Depart-
ment, Main Station, Hwy 202, Mist OR
97016, for flood victim relief.

KYLE ROBERT KEPIC
Kyle Robert Kepic, 24, Portland,
died February 6, 2008. A celebration of
life was held February 18 at St. Johns
Christian Church.
Mr. Kepic was born March 29,
1983, to Robert and Debbie Kepic. He
was an artist and a painter by trade.
Survivors include his life compan-
ion, Amanda Sullivan; his father of St.
Helens; his mother of Vernonia; a sis-
ter, Kati of Portland; his stepmother,
Caron; and two grandmothers, Ellen
Kepic and Patsy Fawver.
JAMES EDWARD PECK, JR.
James Edward Peck, Jr., 74, Ver-
nonia, died February 6, 2008. At his re-
quest, there will be no funeral or memo-
rial at this time. Private interment has
been held.
Mr. Peck was born October 4, 1933,
in Los Angeles, California, to James
Edward, Sr. and Dorothy (Ellsworth)
Peck. When he was young, his family
moved to Scappoose. He graduated
from Scappoose High School in 1950.
He served in the U.S. Navy during the
Korean War.
In 1993, he married Cherie Wagner.
They made their home in Vernonia. He
worked as a millwright in Scappoose
for many years, then worked in the
Maintenance Department of Pacific
University until he retired in 1996. He
was also a Certified Flight Instructor.
He was preceded in death by a sis-
ter, Darlene McKale.
Survivors include his wife, his moth-
er of Stillwater, Oklahoma; two step-
sons, Michael Califf Wagner of Mar-
tinez, Calif., and Rick Califf of Portland;
two stepdaughters, Brenda Ennis of
Lincoln City, and Lisa Califf of Hillsboro;
a brother, Dale of Norway, Michigan;
and six grandchildren.
Remembrances are suggested to
the Vernonia Volunteer Ambulance As-
sociation.

WILLIAM FLOYD THOMPSON
JAMES LAWRENCE BENES
James Lawrence Benes, 84, Ver-
nonia, died February 6, 2008. Private
interment has been held.
Mr. Benes was born October 22,
1923, in Lewiston, Montana, to James
Frank and Mildred (Anderson) Benes.
He was raised in Lewiston. He served
in the U.S. Coast Guard during World
War II.
In 1950, he married Laurada C.
Hartford. They made their home in
Montana until 1973 when they moved
to Aloha. In 1990, they moved to Ver-
nonia. He worked as a grain elevator
Alma Lillian Lyda, 91, Dufur, died
February 10, 2008. Graveside services
were held February 14 at the Hillside
Cemetery in Forest Grove.
Mrs. Lyda was born February 25,
1916, in Forest Grove, to Oscar N. and
Mabel (Dreeszen) Love. She was
raised in Forest Grove, graduating from
Forest Grove High School in 1933. She
also attended Oregon State University.
In 1937, she married Lanore C.
Lyda. They made their home in Banks
and Forest Grove until moving to the
Lyda Ranch in Dufur in 1968.
She was preceded in death by two
brothers, Estel and Melvin (Peck) Love.
Survivors include two sons, Norman
Lyda and Melvin Lyda, both of Dufur;
two daughters, JoAnn Stuck of Keizer
and Carolyn Barker of La Pine; a sister,
Louine Lyda of Forest Grove; 11 grand-
children; 17 great-grandchildren;
nieces and nephews.
Remembrances are suggested to
the Grace Covenant Church, 690 NE
Court St., Dufur OR 97021.

William Floyd Thompson, 85, Ver-
nonia, died February 7, 2008. A cele-
bration of life will be held Saturday,
February 23, at 10:00 a.m. at the First
Baptist Church in Vernonia with the
Reverend Kevin Brown officiating. A re-
ception for family and friends will be
held following the service, at the Ver-
nonia Scout Cabin. Private interment at
Vernonia Memorial Cemetery has been
held.
Mr. Thompson was born September
6, 1922, in Los Angeles, California, to
William F. and Nora (Martin) Thomp-
son. He was raised in Calif.
In 1956, he married Auda M. White.
They made their home in Marysville,
Calif. until moving to Eugene in 1963
and to Vernonia in 1968. He worked for
many years as a dispensing optician for
Columbian Optical, which later became
Anderson Opticians.
He was preceded in death by his
wife.
Survivors include four sons, Donald
Thompson of Forest Grove, Robert
Black of Junction City, James Thomp-
son of Brentwood, Calif., and William
Thompson Jr. of Portland; a daughter,
Wanda Black of Salem; a sister, Marion
Wright of Rogue River; 10 grandchil-
dren; and eight great-grandchildren.
Remembrances are suggested to
the First Baptist Church, 359 A Street,
Vernonia OR 97064.

MISTY LYNNANN WHITE
Misty Lynnann White, 28, Banks,
died February 3, 2008. Graveside serv-
ices were held February 14 at Union
Point Cemetery with the Reverend
Richard E. Osburn officiating, followed
by interment.
Ms. White was born September 9,
1979, in Las Vegas, Nevada, to Lynn
Robert White and Cory Elizabeth Reid.
She was raised in Las Vegas and was
currently a student at the Western Culi-
nary School in Portland. She moved to
Bend in about 2006, then to Portland.
She moved to Banks in 2007.
She was preceded in death by her
father. Her fiancé, Martin J. Arthur and
her unborn son, Wyatt William, also
died as a result of the automobile acci-
dent that caused Ms. White’s death.
Survivors include her son, Connor
Reece White of Las Vegas, Nev.; her
mother of Las Vegas, Nev.; a sister, Eri-
ka Kuikahi-Valdez of Las Vegas, Nev.;
her grandfather, Jeff Reid of Las Ve-
gas, Nev.; and her grandmother, Bever-
ly Johnson of Los Angeles, California.
