Flood support group now started
A Vernonia Community Sup-
port Group, facilitated by a lo-
cal Social Worker, is being held
each Friday, from 7-9:00 p.m.,
at the Vernonia Community
Grange, 457 North St.
The group was started for all
adults affected by the flood.
There is no charge, though vol-
untary donations to defray
electricity and heating ($.50 to
$1.) will be accepted.
Come give and get support,
exchange information, network
with others, and use this as an
opportunity for unedited shar-
ing. There will be potluck
snacks, fruit plates, dessert
and coffee/tea.
Domestic partner forms available
The Oregon Department of
Human Services (DHS) has
made domestic partnership
declaration forms available
since February 1, following a
federal court ruling that allows
Oregon’s domestic partnership
law to go into effect.
Forms are on the Web at the
DHS Vital Records Web site.
They are also will be available
at county clerks’ offices
throughout the state, according
to Jennifer Woodward, state
registrar in the DHS Public
Health Division. County clerk
office locations are listed in the
white pages of the telephone
book under the County Gov-
ernment section.
Forms can also be obtained
via mail from the DHS Center
for Health Statistics, Attn: Mary
Ann Jensen, 800 N.E. Oregon
St., Suite 225, Portland, OR
97232; or via e-mail at
Mary.ann.jensen@state.or.us.
Completed, signed and no-
tarized forms can be registered
at any county clerk’s office.
Certified copies of declarations
filed at the county can be pur-
chased when they are filed, or
any time after the declaration is
registered. People should con-
tact the county clerk’s office for
fee information, according to
Woodward.
County clerks will send reg-
istered Declaration of Domestic
Partnership forms to the DHS
Center for Health Statistics on
a monthly basis, where they
will be filed as vital records.
Certified vital record copies
of declarations filed at the Cen-
ter for Health Statistics can be
purchased by family members,
legal representatives, or per-
sons or organizations with a
personal or property right. Cost
is $20 for a first copy and $15
for each additional copy or-
dered at the same time.
Woodward advises individu-
als to allow six weeks after the
record is registered with the
county clerk to allow time for
the record to be transferred to
the Center for Health Statistics
and entered into the vital
records system.
Bottle/can drive
to help seniors
The Vernonia High School
Senior Class will hold a
bottle/can drive on Sunday,
February 10, at the Student
Parking Lot between noon and
3:00 p.m.
Monies raised will be used
towards the senior trip.

time I’ve

this arti-
cle, so
maybe I
can fin-
ish this
one.
This is some kind of a winter,
yes?
Where do the seniors go to
visit one another now? One
spot is the Black Bear around
1:00 p.m. on Wednesdays – we
even sang Happy Birthday to
Francine.
Another word to three small
children I scolded at the fishing
dock for climbing over the rail
trying to break the ice by
stomping it with their feet – I
meant it when I asked you
“How would your mother react
to be told her child had fallen
through the ice?”
Now, are we all as smart as
a Blackbird? Janice and I were
forced to obey the traffic laws in
downtown Vernonia the other
day as we crossed Rock Creek
Bridge. A crow was walking
across Bridge St. in the cross-
walk (obeying the law also).
There was no one behind us so
we slowed, almost to a stop,
and watched and laughed. It
WALKED every step, curb to
curb. Some folks may have
said or thought “dumb bird” but
me, I think it was just tired of
being in such a rush, flitting
from here to there all day. Do
any of you older folk recall the
song, “Blackbird”? All I can re-
call are the words “Blackbird,
Blackbird”. I can hear the tune
in my head but can’t sing it. It
was in my pre-teen years, prob-
ably a ‘flapper’ song and
dance.
A personal Thank You to the
Metro West gents that gave me
a smooth midnight ride to Hills-
boro Tuality one Friday night.
Diagnosis not as bad as
thought but they did find the
problem. You’ll get your cook-
ies when I’m back on my feet.
Thanks again for being there
when you’re needed.
I know you may not be inter-
ested, but the weather and oth-
er things can make a person
house bound. You get bored,
right? So, in knitting a size 2
child sweater, there are 16,814
stitches and it takes 12 hours
over a 7-day period.

Republicans plan Lincoln Day Dinner
The theme of the Columbia
County Republicans’ Lincoln
Day Dinner, on February 23,
will be “Ronald Reagan Trib-
ute”.
The dinner will be held at the
Moose Lodge Family Center in
Warren and will start with a so-
cial hour at 5:30 p.m. followed
by dinner at 6:30 p.m. The
speaker will be Vance Day, the
chairman of the Oregon Re-
publican Party.
The cost is $20 per person.
