A mass was held August 8 at St. Fran-
cis of Assisi Catholic Church in Roy.
Mr. Criswell was born June 17,
1936, to Harold and Eileen Criswell. He
was raised in Euclid, Ohio. After a year
of college he joined the U.S. Navy.
In 1958, he married Jan Adams.
They moved to Banks in 1970, then to
Arizona in 1999. He worked for GTE for
32 years, then for nine years he worked
for Preformed Line Products.
He was preceded in death by two
siblings.
Survivors include his wife; two sons,
Joseph and James; five daughters, Lori
Godfrey-Cross, Jana Olson, Paula Mc-
Murry, Marcie Smith, and Erin Larsen;
and 12 grandchildren.
GLADYS M. JOHNSON
Gladys M. Johnson, 91, Forest
Grove, died July 26, 2007. A private
graveside service has been held.
Mrs. Johnson was born August 24,
1914, in Fort Yukon, Alaska. Her maid-
en name was Petersen. She later lived
in Vernonia, then moved to Forest
Grove in 1964. She married Ulio So-
zoff. He died in 1974. She later married
Erwin Johnson. She retired from Gray
and Company in Forest Grove.
Survivors include her daughter,
Jeanette M. Sozoff of Portland; eight
grandchildren and several great-grand-
children.
Remembrances are suggested to
St. Bedes Episcopal Church.
DONNA JEAN GONNUSCIO
Donna Jean Gonnuscio, 53, Cor-
nelius, died August 6, 2007. A celebra-
tion of life was held August 11 in North
Plains.
Mrs. Gonnuscio was born February
14, 1954, in Chicago, Illinois, to Albert
and Dorothy (La Pointe) Gerke. When
she was 13, the family moved to Man-
ning.
In 1971, she married William Van-
dehey. They later divorced. She mar-
ried Gordon Gonnuscio in 1983. They
made their home in Banks until moving
to Cornelius in 1985.
She was preceded in death by her
husband.
Survivors include a son, Leonard
Gonnuscio of Cornelius; a daughter,
Michelle Kind of Cornelius; two broth-
ers, Richard Gerke of Downers Grove,
Ill., and Kurt Gerke of Tennessee; two
sisters, Sharon Pazdell of North Lake,
Ill., and Diane Smiley of Hillsboro; 11
grandchildren; nieces and nephews.

HAROLD ERNEST SEIFFERT
Harold Ernest Seiffert, 91, Gaston,
died August 3, 2007. A celebration of
life was held August 8 at Forest Grove
Memorial Chapel. Interment followed at
Forest View Cemetery in Forest Grove.
Mr. Seiffert was born June 28, 1916,
in Gobel, to Aldoph and Ruby (Davis)
Seiffert. He graduated from Newberg
High School in 1936.
In 1937, he married Jane Berger.
She died in 1976. He married Helen
Stream Rich in 1977. She died in 1995.
In 1997, he married Ella C. Nitchman.
They made their home in Cherry
Grove. He worked on the family farm
until 1937, when he worked for 17
years as a log truck driver for Alder
Creek Lumber Company. He then
worked in maintenance until retiring.
Survivors include his wife; two sons,
Rick of Scappoose, and Harold “Buz” of
Hillsboro; a daughter, Donna Twigg of
Gaston; two brothers, Waldo of Cottage
Grove, and Ovid of Jewell; a sister,
Naomi Alberding of Bend; six grandchil-
dren; three step-grandchildren; 18
great-grandchildren; three great-great-

DONALD GEORGE BENEDICT
Donald George Benedict, 75,
Banks, died July 29, 2007. Graveside
services were held August 9 at the Park
Hill Cemetery in Vancouver, Washing-
ton, with the Reverend C. Eugene
Sabin, retired, officiating. Interment fol-
lowed at the cemetery.
Mr. Benedict was born December 8,
1931, in Portland, to John M. and Mar-
ian (Bauer) Benedict. He was raised in
Portland. He had made his home in
Banks for the past 22 years. He worked
as a laborer at City Liquidators in Port-
land for many years before retiring in
1987.
Survivors include a brother, John of
Beavercreek; a sister, Dona Benedict
of Estacada; nieces and nephews.

MARTHA JANE “MARTI” BORTON
Martha Jane Borton, 70, Cornelius,
died July 29, 2007. A celebration of life
was held August 4 at the Fuiten, Rose
& Hoyt Funeral Home in Forest Grove
with the Reverend Michael Crossman
of the Valley Full Gospel Church offici-
ating. Interment followed at Valley
Memorial Park in Hillsboro.
Mrs. Borton was born December
27, 1936, in Bolivar, Missouri, to Rosa
Lewis. When she was young, the fami-
ly moved to Vernonia. She attended
Vernonia High School.
In1978, she married Ralph I. Bor-
ton. They made their home in North
Plains, Forest Grove, and Cornelius.
She worked as a cook and bartender at
the Twin Oaks tavern for several years.
She was preceded in death by her
husband; and her daughter, Saundra K.
Wilson.
Survivors include two brothers, Carl
“Harry” Weaver of Gaston and John L.
Horsley of Forest Grove; two sisters,
Betty L. Crossman of Hillsboro and Mil-
dred L. Ayers of Forest Grove; her step-
father, Pastor Los Horsley of Cornelius;
one granddaughter; three great-grand-
children; nieces and nephews.

JESSE GENE BROOKS
Jesse Gene Brooks, 77, Banks,
died July 31, 2007. A celebration of life
will be held Saturday, August 25, at
1:00 p.m. at Sunset Park in Banks.
Mr. Brooks was born March 11,
1930, in Tillamook, to Raymond and
Ilene (Masterson) Brooks. He was
raised in Tillamook. He served in the
U.S. Army.
In 1975, he married Joan Van-
derzanden. They made their home in
Forest Grove for about six years before
moving to Banks. He worked as a
sheetrock installer.
Survivors include his wife; three
sons, Jesse of Milwaukie, Walt of
Nevada, and Ted of Portland; a daugh-
ter, Rosanna Terrill of Wilsonville; one
stepson, Brian Richart of Portland; two
stepdaughters, Shelly Richart of Banks,
and Janet Christy of Astoria; four broth-
ers, Raymond and Jerry, both of
McMinnville, Howard of Canby, and
Ronald of Stayton; three sisters,
Shirley Andrews of Molalla, Bonnie
Shipley and Zelma Botel, both of
McMinnville; 17 grandchildren; one
great-grandson; nieces and nephews.

VIOLET MAY “VIE” BROWN
Violet May “Vie” Brown, 83, Banks,
died July 29, 2007. Graveside services
were held August 9 at the Park Hill
Cemetery in Vancouver, Washington,
with the Reverend C. Eugene Sabin,
retired, officiating. Interment followed at
the cemetery.
Mrs. Brown was born November 15,
1923, in Portland, to Marion Oliver and
Edith May (Young) Lewis. In addition to
her parents, she was raised by her
grandparents, Thomas and Rosalie
Young. She was a descendant of the
Meriwether Lewis family. When she
was three, the family moved to Vancou-
ver, Washington. She graduated from
Franklin High School in Portland in
1942.
In 1976, she married Billy T. Brown.
They made their home in Banks. She
worked as a bartender at various
places, including The Dingheiser in
Manning.
She was preceded in death by her
husband and a brother, Robert Martin
Strand.
Survivors include two sons, Thomas
Kay Falconer of Corbett and Charles
M. Muller of Beaverton; two daughters,
Mary Lou “Penny” (Falconer) Lowe of
Springville, Utah, and Collette May
(Muller) Kramer of Portland; eight
grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren;
two great-great-granddaughters; and
three nephews.

JAMES MATTHEWS WARNER
James Matthews Warner, 51, Hills-
boro, died August 7, 2007. A celebra-
tion of life will be held August 19, from
5:00 to 10:00 p.m., at McMenamins
Grand Lodge in Forest Grove.
Mr. Warner was born February 26,
1956, in Hillsboro, to Fred and Juana
(Mungia) Warner. He was raised in
Banks and graduated from Banks High
School in 1974.
In 1989, he married Edna Husca.
They made their home in Hillsboro. He
worked in maintenance, most recently
at Merix Corp. until retiring due to ill-
ness in 2007.
Survivors include his wife; a son,
Teheren of Hillsboro; a stepson, Jerry
Austin of Hillsboro; a stepdaughter, An-
gelia Austin of Gaston; his mother of
Forest Grove; three brothers, Dave of
Hillsboro, Rick of La Center, Washing-
ton, and Fred of Blaine, Wash.; one sis-
ter, Debbie Warner of Forest Grove;
and two grandchildren.
