Between the Bookends
By Sarah Vandehey, Library Assistant
Banks Public Library
Join us for Preschool Story
Time Wednesdays at 10:15
am. This event is geared for 3-
6 year olds, but younger sib-
lings are welcome. This month
Miss Kathy will read on the fol-
lowing themes:
June 27, Down on the Farm
July 4, nostory time due to In-
dependence Day.
It’s time to sign up for summer reading! This year’s
theme is “Get a Clue @ Your Washington County Li-
braries.” Our summer reading program (SRP) is for
children and young adults (from babies to those in high
school). Those who sign up will receive a coupon good
for one free round of miniature golf or Kidopolis Play-
land admission at the Family Fun Center & Bullwin-
kle’s Restaurant. There are also three ways to win
prizes: 1) You will be entered in the grand prize draw-
ing when you sign up; 2) participants are eligible to win
prizes at weekly drawings if they come in and fill out
raffle slips with the titles of books read or listened to
each week; 3) those who meet their reading goal will
earn a prize book. Reading books, listening to books
on tape, or having a book read to you (for pre-readers)
all count toward your reading goal. Stop by the library
to pick up a brochure with more information about all
the SRP events at the Banks Public Library.
Starting July 1 the library will be open more hours!
Lost hours will be restored because Washington
County Measure 34-126 (the library levy) passed last
November. We appreciate the support of voters, the
City of Banks and other proponents for recognizing the
library’s value to our community.
Some of our newest books include the following
(Descriptions are based largely on the book jackets
and covers.):
Fiction
Dragonwell Dead by Laura Childs. The author of
Blood Orange Brewing returns with a new mystery in
which seemingly innocuous pleasures such as tea and
flowers are tied to a man’s death. Mark Congdon
makes the winning bid for a rare orchid at an elite
Charleston flower show. When he dies, his widow and
Theodosia Browning, owner of a local tea shop, sus-
pect that floral foul play is afoot.
A Crazy Little Thing Called Death by Nancy Martin.
The Blackbird sisters are back, and the family curse
may be following them. Destitute heiress Nora Black-
bird is engaged to Mick Abruzzo, the son of a known
mobster, and this is causing quite a stir. Are Mick’s
close calls with death caused by the Blackbird family
curse or Mick’s family business?
Fear of the Dark by Walter Mosley. The characters
from Fearless Jones and Fear Itself are back in this
thriller set in 1950s Los Angeles. Paris Minton’s con
artist cousin, Ulysses—aka “Useless”—is missing. Is
he lying low to avoid those he has duped or is he
dead? Paris reluctantly agrees to track him down with
the help of his street-wise friend Fearless Jones.
Non-fiction
The Proper Care and Feeding of Husbands by Dr.
Laura Schlessinger. In this work, the author discusses
the importance of appreciating the distinction between
femininity and masculinity. She illustrates ways for
spouses to relate to and nurture one an-
other, with examples from her call-in radio
show.
Palestine: Peace Not Apartheid by Jimmy Carter.
Best-selling author, Noble Peace Prize winner and for-
mer head of state, President Carter gives his evalua-
tion of the steps necessary to bring about lasting
peace and justice to Israel and Palestine. In this in-
formative, opinionated work, Mr. Carter shares his per-
sonal experiences with the major players in this con-
flict and speaks to sensitive political concerns.
YOU: on a Diet by Michael Riozen and Mehmet Oz.
The authors, both doctors, continue their YOU series
with information about how our bodies store and burn
fat. With this knowledge, and other motivational tips
the authors include, you can learn how to achieve life-
long waist management.
Women & Money by Suze Orman. The well-known
personal finance specialist discusses how women can
take responsibility for, and control of their money. A
straightforward, five-month program—the Save Your-
self Plan—at the middle of this work offers advice for
lifelong financial security.
