The four letters which appear on the four corners of a dreidel are a
reference to the miracle of Hanukkah.
To make dreidels: Trace the dreidel pattern on poster board, color
and cut out. Glue or tape dreidels together, fitting the small rolled-
up turners into the tops to enable them to spin. Make enough for
everyone to have his or her own dreidel. Pass out an equal number of
raisins, candies, or peanuts to each player.
Play the dreidel game using the following rules:
Each player puts one raisin, candy or peanut in the center. Then the
first player spins the dreidel. If it lands on:
Nun – the player does nothing
Gimel – the player takes everything in the center
Hay – the player takes half
Shin – the player puts one item in
Before the next player spins, everyone puts another piece in the cen-
ter.
