Banks School board hears about summer projects
At the first meeting of the ac-
ademic year on September 11,
the Banks School District
Board of Directors heard about
projects that were worked on
over the summer and how the
school year was starting.
Superintendent Marv Ott de-
scribed some of the physical
improvements made this sum-
mer. They included re-roofing
the community gym, painting
several classrooms at the high
school, moving the high school
career center and moving spe-
cial education classes out of
the district office building into
the high school. In addition,
work is almost complete on two
new classrooms in the high
school that were created from
the old shop room. Work will be
completed this week on the
Crow’s Nest to install new
steps and handrails so that
safety issues will be ad-
dressed. Interior improvements
were made to the Crow’s Nest
by volunteers.
Activities Director Jim Smith
said that there continues to be
work needed at the football
field to make sure it is safe. He
will look into lighting issues,
both in the stadium and in the
parking lot for after games. He
thanked the board for their sup-
port of athletics and help with
funding for maintenance. He

added that a combination of
school district funding and
many private donations have
made it possible to do many im-
provements including the
crow’s nest, fencing of the
baseball outfield, new banners
for the gym and, eventually,
new PA systems for the softball
and baseball fields.
All of the administrators re-
ported that the year was off to a
good start. Mark Everett, junior
high school principal, said that
only seventh graders came to
the school the first day this year
and that it was a good way to
start the year. The students
were able to meet with all their
teachers and get some small
group time as they learned their
new routines. Jim Foster, high
school principal, reported a
similar experience at the high
school with just the freshman
starting the first day. He added
that he had positive feedback
from parents too.
Ott said that, so far, enroll-
ment for the year was just
slightly down, but stressed that
students are continuing to
show up and said that a more
realistic figure would be avail-
able next month.
The board approved a trip
for the girls’ volleyball team to a
tournament in Sisters, Septem-
ber 22-24, and a trip for FFA to
a leadership Camp in Tillam-
ook, September 17 and 18.
The board also approved the
consent agenda which included
the following staffing changes:

teacher

nology teacher

grade job share
