Are you interested in native plants, exotic plants, or creating a garden that is at- tractive to wildlife? The Oregon Zoo’s Horticulture Volunteer program is offering an orienta- tion and training for volunteers to work with zoo horticulturists this spring and summer. The Oregon Zoo Horticulture Volunteer orientations are Tuesday, February 28, at 10:00 a.m. or Thursday, March 2, at 10:00 a.m. Oregon Zoo Horticulture Vol- The Shoestring Community Players of St. Helens are pleased to announce auditions for “My Fair Lady,” this sum- mer’s musical. The auditions will be held at 6:30 p.m. on both Monday and Tuesday, February 27 and 28, in the Olmscheid Auditorium at St. Helens High School. Perfor- mances will be on the last three weekends of July. Needed are 20 men and 11 women for speaking roles, plus a large, all age chorus consist- ing of turn of the century Lon- doners, members of the upper unteers may be involved in; enhancing the butterfly garden, maintaining geographic gar- dens, improving animal envi- ronments, building new exhibit garden features, and plant con- servation and education. Oregon Zoo’s Horticulture Department is a member of the Association of Zoological Horti- culture, and as a member is dedicated to the promotion of plant and animal conservation and the advancement of horti- culture throughout the region. Oregon Zoo Horticulture Vol- unteers must be over the age of 18 and commit to 16 hours per month (usually in four hours per week blocks) between 6:00 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. The great- est need is during weekdays. Oregon Zoo Horticulture Volun- teers have an opportunity to make a difference in the com- munity by supporting the zoo’s efforts to educate the public about plant and animal conser- vation. Volunteers meet people who share similar interests and values, receive free zoo admis- sion and can participate in unique training opportunities only available at the zoo. Republicans are sponsoring a Lincoln Day Dinner A Lincoln Day Dinner spon- sored by the Columbia County Republican Central Committee will be held February 25, at the Moose Lodge Family Center, 57317 Old Portland Rd. in War- ren. The social hour and silent auction will begin at 5:30 p.m. with a complete roast beef din- ner served at 6:30 p.m. This year’s theme is “Honor- ing Our Military” and will in- clude honoring Afghanistan- Iraqi War veterans. Donations will also be taken to help local families who have family mem- bers serving in the War. The featured speaker for the evening will be U.S. Marine Colonel Mike Howard, of Hills- boro, who served two tours of duty in Iraq. Colonel Howard grew up on a California ranch where his family raised race horses; his great-grandfather had owned Seabiscuit. His fa- ther was a Marine corporal in WWII. Colonel Howard joined the USMC in 1974 and has served as a combat engineer his entire career.
