Some types of “pharming” and “phishing” may be very expensive
“Pharming” and “phishing” are
terms used to describe the act
of cyberspace criminals coax-
ing secured information from
individuals using the Internet by
portraying themselves as a well
known company. The cyber
criminals send email messages
to thousands of people hoping
to connect with just a few. you
may, for example, receive an
email from what appears to be
a well known company that
reads something like this:
“As the Internet and informa-
tion technology enable us to
expand our services, we are
committed to maintaining the
trust customers have placed in
us for protecting the privacy

The problem is the link does
not take you to the actual com-
pany, but a very well disguised
replica that is run by a cyber

card. A company with a com-
puter network security breach
will not inform their clients over
that same network via email or
the Internet.
Unless you plan to purchase
something on the Internet, your
credit card information doesn’t
really need to be stored. If you
want to keep an account cur-
rent, use phone numbers and
sales representatives that you
have used in the past. Take the
time to call and confirm the is-
sue with the company. It will
save you al lot of time and trou-
ble in the future.

FTLAC meet in Salem
The Forest Trust Land Advi-
sory Committee (FTLAC) will
meet Friday, Jan. 6, to discuss
performance measures for Ore-
gon’s state-managed forest-
lands.
The seven member commit-
tee represents the 15 counties

and Washington) that have
state forest land within their
boundaries and receive rev-
