Cross-Country
The running season ended
on a very good note this year,
with the team sending two run-
ners to the state meet. Nicole
Frantz and Sam Thornton both
placed in the top seven at the
District Meet at Pier Park to
qualify.
At Districts, Frantz ran a
22:07 and placed fourth. Thorn-
one part of the course, “Every
time I took a step, the mud
would come up to the top of my
shoe.” Frantz finished 42 out of
115 with a time of 22:37. Her
time was three and a half min-
utes off winner Casey Stengel’s
time of 19:04.
Sam Thornton battled the
rain and a cold in his race.

The Loggers finished their
season with a blowout victory
over the Neah-Kah-Nie Pirates
on November 4. The Loggers,
who lost the previous week to
Warrenton, had already been
eliminated from the playoffs,
but wanted to end the season
on a win. Well, they won in a
big way, 55-0 to be exact. In a
game where they scored on
their first two possessions, the
Loggers came out running from
the start.
Running back Brent Thomp-
son had 118 yards on 18 car-
yards rushing on nine carries,
with two touchdowns. Through
the air the Loggers only passed
for 51 yards, going 3-5 with two
touchdowns. Lende went 2-4
with a touchdown pass to wide
receiver Bryan Budge, and in a
trick play, Thompson threw a 25
yard touchdown pass to Lende.
All three of the senior players
scored at least one point.
Lende passed for one touch-
down, ran for two, and had one
receiving. Budge had one re-
ceiving touchdown, and Line-
man John Howley kicked an
extra point.

Overall, Thompson had three
touchdowns, one of them a
kickoff return. Quarterback
Russell Lende also had 118

amassed 361 yards of total of-
fense, 310 of those yards rush-
ing. The team’s final record was

ton ran a personal best by 20
seconds, 18:20, and placed
sixth. As a team, the Boys var-
sity placed fourth, and the Girls
team placed fifth.
The State meet was held
November 5 at Lane Communi-
ty College in Eugene on a very
rainy day. For most of the previ-
ous day, and the day of the
meet, it poured. Footing was a
big issue for all the runners, for
the race was entirely on grass
or bark dust. This is what
Nicole Frantz had to say about
the finish], I couldn’t kick if I
wanted to,” he said after the
race. A kick is the term for
sprinting at the end, or giving it
all you have left. Thornton fin-
ished 71 out of 115 with a time
of 19:26, over three minutes off
winner Brad Taylor’s time of
16:22. Taylor had won the pre-
vious two State titles, making
him only the second runner in
Oregon High School Sports
history to win three cross-coun-
try titles in a row.
