The INDEPENDENT, October 20, 2005 Vernonia High School Sports Report By Ben Schorzman FOOTBALL The Loggers have once again found the winning track, beating the Portland Christian Royals on October 7, by 47-14 and the Riverdale Mavericks 14-13 on Homecoming, Octo- ber 14. Against the Royals (4-2, 2- 2), the Loggers (3-3, 2-2) played a very solid game. Run- ning back Brent Thompson had 158 yards on 18 carries, and on defense had two interceptions, one returned for a touchdown. Safety/Quarterback Russell Lende had two touchdowns, one rushing, and one on de- fense, returning a fumble. Wide-out Jeff Paleck scored two touchdowns, Luke John- ston, and Dylan Burch also scored. On Homecoming night in pouring rain, Vernonia battled with Riverdale. Through half- time, the score was zero-zero, with no team having the upper hand. Then, with three minutes and forty three seconds left, running back Brent Thompson ran 14 yards for the first score of the game. Thompson fin- ished with 106 yards on 26 car- ries and a touchdown. The PAT was blocked, making the score 6-0. Riverdale scored six plays after the kick-off, but on the PAT the kicker slipped, saving the Logger’s hopes of winning the game. The game went into over- time where each team gets a possession from the twenty five yard line. Riverdale won the coin toss and chose to play of- fense first. The Mavericks moved the ball quickly, scored, and hit the PAT. The Loggers took over the ball, down 13-6. After gaining a first down, quar- terback Russell Lende connect- ed with tight end Jeremy Lende for a touchdown. The players elected to go for a two-point conversion to win the game. Lende handed the ball off on a blast left to Thompson, who pushed into the end-zone for the win, 14-13. VOLLEYBALL The Lady Loggers go into the last week of the season 2-6 in league play, and are out of the playoff picture. But that doesn’t mean future matches don’t count. The Loggers want to win their two games this week to end the season on a good note. They play number seven Portland Christian Octo- ber 18, and Portland Lutheran on October 20. On October 4, they beat the Riverdale Mavericks at home 3-0. Then, on Thursday, Octo- ber 6, the team traveled to Neah-Kah-Nie and lost 3-0. Oc- tober 10 brought another win, beating Portland Adventist 3-2. On Pack the Gym Night, Octo- ber 11, the Lady Loggers played well against the Corbett Cardinals but lost 3-1. Going into the third game, they had been beaten easily, but Vernon- ia came out and played their best volleyball of the year. They were diving all across the court for balls, they blocked numer- ous hits, and they hit a few of their own. They pulled it out 27- 25, and went into the next game with the same intensity. The girls couldn’t hold it though, and lost 25-20. CROSS-COUNTRY The cross-country team has two more weeks left in the sea- son, and they are running hard in preparation. October 20, they run the League Meet at Knappa, and October 29, at Pier Park for Districts. On the sixth they ran at Tro- jan Park for a relay.
