Vernonia High School Sports Report
By Ben Schorzman
FOOTBALL
The Loggers are looking to
regroup after a good start
turned sour. The season start-
ed with a win against number
four ranked Blanchet, with
quarterback Russell Lende
throwing for 347 yards and four
touchdowns. The game was
won late in the fourth quarter
when the Loggers put together
a two-and-a-half minute, 80-
yard scoring drive. Lende threw
the winning TD pass into the
left corner of the end-zone to
Jeff Paleck, who made a diving
catch over two defenders.
The next week, against the
Scio Loggers, Vernonia came
off the bus flat. By halftime they
had spotted Scio to a 31-0
lead. The second half was
even, with each team scoring
20 points, making the final
score 51-20. The following
week, the Loggers s
Starting league play, next, in
Clatskanie against the Tigers,
Vernonia fell behind 14-0, and
didn’t score until late in the
fourth quarter, making the
score 33-6, and preventing the
shutout.
The September 30th game
against the Knappa Loggers in
Vernonia will be covered in the
next issue of The INDEPEN-
DENT.
VOLLEYBALL
The volleyball team has got-
ten off to a less than desirable
start this season, going 1-5 en-
tering their fourth league match
September 29 against De
LaSalle. The Lady Loggers
played a tough non-league
schedule, including a match
against number two ranked
Gervais. League didn’t get any
easier, with matches against
number nine Corbett, and num-
ber 18 Portland Christian. The
Loggers’ first league match,
against number 14 Knappa, at
Knappa, ended in a three game
defeat. They lost the next
match in Clatskanie in three
games also, but started hitting
their stride in the third game.
September 27, against the
Warrenton Warriors in Vernon-
ia, the team put up a good fight
before losing in three straight
games by scores of 25-18, 26-
24, 25-23.

VHS volunteer
opportunities
Vernonia High School is re-
cruiting volunteers. All types of
meets. This is about the time
that the wear and tear of the
early running season starts tak-
ing its toll on runners, but wise-
ly scheduled are three “easy”
runs that the Loggers are
thankful for. After the Oregon
Episcopal School Invitational
on the twentieth, the team has
three runs that are shorter than
the 3.1 mile standard. Septem-
ber 27 they ran at home in the
Vernonia Lake Relay, which
was a 2.3 mile relay, with a four
person team. The team of
Christina Sohler, Nicole Frantz,
Ben Schorzman, and Sam
Thornton won the coed divi-
sion, and Vernonia placed sec-
ond in the boys’ and girls’ divi-
sions to Knappa. Next up is an-
other relay, this time at Trojan
Park, the old nuclear reactor on
the Columbia River next to
Rainier. Following that is a
4000 meter race in Scappoose
on the twelfth. Keeping the
team healthy through these
races is going to be key be-
cause, after the Scappoose In-
vitational, the Loggers have the
league meet in Knappa, then

Park.
volunteers are welcome. We
are looking to establish a list of
guest speakers. We need vol-
unteers for the classrooms, in
the office, and to help with stu-
dent activities. Any community
member with special interests
or unique talents is welcome.
Regular volunteers will have to
agree to a standard back-
ground check. Volunteer infor-
mation packets and applica-
tions are available at the high
school or district office.
