The INDEPENDENT, September 15, 2005 Page 15 Banks School Board kept busy with certified and classified contracts Banks School Board voted to ratify three-year employment contracts with certified and classified staff at their meeting September 12. The contracts run from July 1, 2005, to June 30, 2008. Board member Doug Nord- holm stated that the board had four goals going into negotia- tions, two were primary and two secondary. The main goals were to establish a multi-year contract and to adopt a pay schedule with fewer steps. The secondary goals were to make the early and middle steps of the schedule more attractive in order to retain teachers, and to make the salaries at the top of the schedule more compatible to those of comparable dis- tricts. The secondary goals were achieved by adopting a pay schedule with fewer steps. The new certified contract calls for an 18 step schedule in- stead of the previous 25 steps. It provides a raise of no less than 5.4 percent per employee in the first year. The second and third years of the contract will involve step increases plus a two percent cost of living in- crease. The contract for classified employees increased from a seven step schedule to eight steps. However, the base was raised by 4.5 percent and a rate of 3.5 percent was established between steps. Insurance components of the contract are the same for both certified and classified staff. There will be no addition- al out-of-pocket expense for employees this year. In subse- quent years, the school district will cover increases in premi- ums up to nine percent. In- creases above that amount will fall to employees. Nordholm said that the scale is competitive with comparable districts, adding that much time and effort had gone into making sure that it was. Board member Will Moore said “It sounds like a good fair schedule for every- one. I’m pleased.” The board as a whole was pleased that a three year con- tract had been achieved. In other business, the board discussed adopting district- wide goals. The goals under consideration are the result of a goal-setting workshop with the board, the superintendent and a representative from the Ore- gon School Boards Association (OSBA). These goals will be broad, umbrella-type goals. Also discussed was updat- ing the Budget Guiding Princi- ples to reflect the fact that the district is in a more stable finan- cial position than it was four years ago when the current 20th Drawing held at 6 pm Friday September 23rd tary • Judy Stone, part-time in- structional assistant, junior high • Regina Stradling, part-time instructional assistant, elemen- tary • Jill Brown, part-time locker room assistant, high school • Olivia Walsh, part-time playground supervisor, elemen- tary • Julie Kemper, part-time playground supervisor, elemen- Join us for Birthday Cake Starting at 11 am, Saturday September 17th Pay 1 Full Month and get 1 Full Month FREE* Move in Truck Available Check us out and you’ll want to check in! * Special available for new customers on sizes up to 10 X 10, for a limited time only.
