Page 4 The INDEPENDENT, August 4, 2005 Council okays fireworks at lake this year despite harm to wildlife From page 1 taken at Vernonia Lake and asked Council not to hold fire- works at the lake due to con- cerns for wildlife. McGaugh provided information on the ef- fects of fireworks on wildlife that can range from disorienta- tion to loss of life when fright- ened birds fly into trees or oth- er structures when startled by fireworks. After hearing pros and cons, Mayor Sally Harrison said there seemed to be con- sensus to allow the fireworks this one more time and then no Locally Grown F RESH F LOWERS C UT TO O RDER Julie Prohaska Behind Vernonia Inn 503-429-7055 more. After further discussion, Councilor Shirlee Daughtry moved to allow fireworks during this Jamboree. The motion car- ried with ayes from Daughtry, Councilor Brett Costley, and Harrison. Councilor Shirley Goodman voted nay and Coun- cilor Randy Parrow abstained because he serves on the Jam- boree committee. Council approved lease re- newals for old City Hall and Li- brary to Dixie Palmer, with mi- nor changes addressing the city’s responsibility for mainte- nance and repair, and for Air- port property to Dana Ander- son. The lease to Gail and Larry Snethen for concessions at Vernonia Lake was changed to eliminate both the franchise fee and utility charges, in exchange for running the paddle boat/bi- cycle concessions for the city’s profit. In addition, the lease al- lows the Snethens to sell bar- becued meats with profits go- ing to local non-profit organiza- tions. The Snethens will contin- ue to run their regular conces- sion business. In other business, council: • Set August 29 at 7:00 p.m. at City Hall for an open house on OA Hill Bicycle/Pedestrian Improvements; • Set September 6 at 7:00 p.m. at City Hall for a public hearing on the OA Hill improve- ments; • Set August 15 at 7:00 p.m. at City Hall for a workshop on Downtown Business District - Vacant/Warehoused Structures. Bassett told council that a proposal to replace the Mile Bridge (commonly known as the green steel bridge) was designated as the number two project by the Northwest Area Commission on Transportation (NWACT). Included in the pro- posal’s information is that the bridge was built in 1938 and the lead-based paint on the bridge is deteriorating (Bassett said Community Calendar VERNONIA Alcoholics Anonymous Mondays 6:30 p.m., Head Start Bldg. State Dems affirm support of 2nd Amend. The Democratic Party of Oregon, at their quarterly meet- ing in Medford, passed a reso- lution unconditionally reaffirm- ing the right to keep and bear arms in accordance with the Second Amendment of the U.S. Constitution, and of Article 1, Section 27, of the Oregon State Constitution. The right to bear arms is “an individual right not granted by the government, but rather guaranteed by the govern- ment” the resolution states.
